But mobs take ALOT of Mojang's time, and if the swamp is overhauled, then the desert, savanna, rainforest, tundra, and all other biomes will need to be overhauled too in a near equal way. I adds up to be over 50 new mobs! A while that's great, it's going to take a unreasonably long time to code.
I don't want to argue with you that much, because I do think this is a really great thread.
Thanks. I already have 3 mobs picked out for the desert, and 2 for the jungle: but I don't think each biome will add more than 4 new mobs for each biome, so that's 24 at the absolute most. (and while I know MC isn't a reality simulator, in real life the swamp is an incredibly diverse place. It makes sense to have a lot of different mob types there.)
I think that this is great, but this would make the swamp sort of a boss type area. I mean seriously monsters that are 20 lives. Some can only be killed with fire. 1 to 2 damage per second mobs. People sometimes spawn in swamps. I love the idea, but some of these mobs feel way to powerful to me.

Default mobs have 20 hearts. That is what "20 hearts" means.
The alligator, for example, has a little more health than a Creeper- 25 hearts.
The Shallowbreath is rare, and if you're prepared it won't be a problem.
And if you spawn in a swamp you'll probably want to get out of there until you're better prepared.
Decent ideas, but far, far too many mobs. The Alligator should be sufficient, we don't need double the number of mobs in one biome. I also think the Tar is a bit much, Mud will be sufficient.
Nice! But too many unique mobs. I think each biome should have at most 1 or 2 unique mobs, no more.
but what if every biome had 4-5 uniqui mobs? it would be awesome! traveling from biome to biome would be like traveling thru a portal for the first time if all biomes were as different as this. IT WOULD BE AMAZING!

personally, I feel that a high mob count that varies from biome to biome is a good thing. It gives the game more variety, and actually makes the choice of deciding where to live significant (hm... do I want to live in the flat but deadly swamp, where leveling ground will be easy but I am in more danger, or do I want to live in the uneven but relativly peaceful foothills?)
Also, don't worry about the lethality of swamps spawn-killing people. As they has no sand, players won't spawn in them unless they make a bed (and hence have a shelter) there.
but what if every biome had 4-5 uniqui mobs? it would be awesome! traveling from biome to biome would be like traveling thru a portal for the first time if all biomes were as different as this. IT WOULD BE AMAZING!
That's my plan.
Also, I nerf'd the Alligator a bit- lowered its damage and made it so that it only "sprints" once out of the water.
Edit: Started on the Overgrown Dungeons. They're basically large, multi-room dungeons with lots of plants in them, and several traps and platforming puzzles
hey, this is one of the few quasi-new ideas i actually like. i've always been in support of a new swamp biome since i stated playing v1.3.
+1 for the new blocks, even though mud's been suggested before. i've mentioned in the past a need for mud block, and even the ability to craft mud [a bucket of water in the middle of 8 dirt blocks]. tar would make an interesting block. how would it be collected? a bucket? or a shovel?
i also love the screenshots of the water--how it's green and not blue. and the tree's new shape and the ability to grow in water. what kind of tree would it be? cyprus? willow? both? add the new tree with the new vines in 1.8t and they would be awesome. actually, willow trees would have the vines and the trees above pictured could be the cypress trees.
however, i think there're a few too many new mobs. i think just one or two would be best. one animal, and one creature. i love the idea of biome specific creatures, [again, one or two, okay, maaayyyybe three], but i feel the current mobs should also be able to be found in all biomes.
good job
*edit* i posted this before i thoroughly read all the posts, so some of my ideas were mentioned.
The water is the greatest problem for me (that and the grass), because if a biome is supposed to actually be distinguishable it should have a very different look. Combined with fog and vines, this version of the swamp should be implemented into vanilla simply on account of the different appearance.
Now, like the others, I think that there are a few too many mobs. Personally I love the idea of having unique mobs to each biome - although like llama said, that takes a buttload of time on Notch's part - but even so this suggestion includes far too many. I wouldn't mind if pigs and creepers were included here, at least in some kind of swampy version (because pigs are muddy :tongue.gif: and creepers are just iconic to Minecraft, and nobody should be safe from them by hiding in a swamp :tongue.gif:).
Aside from that, this is a very excellent suggestion. Perhaps we should tweet it to Notch and see if we can at least get some ideas going on in his head?
Edit: I take back what I said about too many new mobs (though it will still take up tons of coding time). Rather than have the giant cricket however to satisfy including bugs in the swamp, why not have just ambient insects? Like, have dragonflies buzzing around, some grasshoppers hopping, stuff like that? You wouldn't be able to kill them, and they wouldn't serve any purpose other than adding some ambience, but it could have a huge impact as a biome.
Likewise, you could have ambient birds in other biomes and stuff so that each biome is similar-ish.
Swamp Biome
Add green grass that functions like “green snow”. It should not grow on stone slabs. This grass sometimes “breaks” when you walk on it making you fall into whatever the grass covers (usually mud)
Add mud – brown water tiles only one block deep.
Add tar – black bubbly square. You cannot move up if you fall into a tar square. You can only move sideways (north, south east, west) in tar. If you dig a square away next to it you can move out of it. Tar squares fall down just like gravel does. Tar can only be picked up in a bucket. Tar can be mixed with gravel to make asphalt slabs – add tar to a square then gravel.
Add bushes to swamps – bushes consist of one block of wood and a lot of blocks of leaves
Add rotten trees to swamp (no leaves) – chopping them gives no wood
Add snakes, crocs, treants (small, 3 square tall living trees) and a mossy monster (looks like a small green bush) that slimes you, In the rotten trees you can have –treasure, snakes or bees and honey
The swamp shown here in the first comment looks nice - although some rotten trees would be nice.

I don't think that mud should be crafted. Remember, the biome overhauls are to encourage exploration! And tar would be collected with a bucket.

Well, most biomes will have the vanilla mobs, just recolored to fit the specific biome. This and possibly the Savanna or Rainforest biomes will be the only ones to exclude most vanilla mobs.
Also, that would be great: If you support this thread, go ahead and tweet it to Notch!
OVAR 9000 AWESOMENESS! i actualy did tell notch about this too! i just think it needs more shrubery. cat tails and lily pads cannotsatisfy me. maybe lily pads with/without flower and water tallgrass with more chan of spawning a gator. and the catipilar must have a cacoon and butterfly form.
incredible, i like the green water, and the water trees. i'd personaly leave the mobs to mojang but i do respect you for making them. and the only things missing are the vines, (they'l be in the actual game)
Of course I didn't include the vines, because those are the one thing Notch came up with for himself :tongue.gif:
I'd also like it if there was some sort of thick mist or similar... though I'm not sure if you already said that, it just seems to me that swamps should always be pretty dark. And, ideally, quite flat...

You might want to look at the Wild Grass mod, if this ever gets made they should be compatible. Also, I think I've already hit the mob limit for one biome...
I like it all except the mobs. The mobs part is stupid IMHO. I like alligators, but the rest are meh, and not having regular mobs spawn is stupid :/
Explain how they are "meh." One of the things I hate most about Minecraft is that you can see every single mob, except slimes, on your first night. Going into a swamp biome should be a new and different experience, fighting against and seeing brand new mobs.

I decided that there are enough monsters already.

That is so very true. +1 added, this is something im looking forword to this :biggrin.gif:

I'll add those to the OP for confirmation.
