Basically, you put all 4 pieces of the same type of armor onto the crafting table somewhere (shapeless recipe), and you get an armor set of that type (leather, iron, diamond, gold).
For the tools, it's the same thing, except you use tools instead of armor. Not sure if it should include hoes or not, but meh that's up to all of you guys and girls.
These sets would be stackable and as such, is a convenient way to store your extra tool/armor sets.
It should do more than just be stack-able, as that's not really a big use.
Maybe having armor sets increase total defense?

Why should it do more? It saves you a whole lot of inventory slots, which can be enormously helpful if you happen to be on a multiplayer server and specialized in supplying armor to other players, or if you just feel you need to stockpile it.
Here is the real problem: how do you take them apart again? The crafting system only converts several things into one type, not vice versa.

Not that I think about it, the idea of it is pretty OP. I mean, there is a reason tools aren't stackable. So that carrying a lot will sacrifice inventory space. You could carry as many items as you want with this.

Here's the thing.
If you don't want your armor to take up space in your inventory, you wear it. This also has the nifty side effect of protecting you from damage.
If you're stashing ridiculous amounts of it all at once, just give it it's own chest. You can store more than you're likely to use all at once in a double-wide chest.
If you really need compressed storage space, just store the iron or diamond or whatever you're using, and toss it together on the spot.
This is approximately as justified as a ham block, or stacking tools.
They take up extra space because they're valuable, and in order to use them to the desired extent, you need to sacrifice your ability to carry other things.

If you are about to make a rebuttal, consider responding to the entire post.
I just make a bunch of spare iron and zanite armor (I have the Aether mod, among a few others). I just felt it would be a cool way to store tools and armor, though the person who said it can't be reverse crafted is right, that is a problem.
Maybe in the future, the crafting bench can have a 3x3 for crafting as well as a 3x3 for the return items.
I'll take someone's suggestion and make a new room in my house with chests dedicated to armor (I have a lot of it, lol).
