Before I say anything else, I do very well realize the fact that redstone blocks have already been suggested many times. However, my version will feature a couple of new twists to this old idea.
Appearance: would have a similar pattern as iron/gold/diamond blocks, but would be dark red while turned off and normal-ish red while turned on and would emit the "sparkle" effect that you get when mining redstone ore (but there would be more particles than when mining the ore).
Recipe: 9 redstone dust for 1 redstone block.
1. A form of mass storage.
-We already know that every redstone block thread suggests them as a form of mass storage (made of 9 redstone dust), and this thread is no different (yet).
2. Toggleable damage over time
-This is where this thread actually starts getting original. People have been suggesting a sort of "shock" block that damages things that walk over it, and the redstone block would do this too (when powered). This would add an actual ability to it besides storage. The damage will also affect touching the side of the block, meaning spiders climbing up them will be affected as well. Now you can have a more-attractive alternative to cactus-walls, and you can turn it off so you can go past harmlessly! The DoT would be equal to that of the cactus.
3. Vertical transmission
-Vertical redstone is a very old idea as well. It makes sense that you can't make dust stick to a wall, but with a block you could stack them to transfer redstone signals upwards. Don't say "we already have vertical redstone, just use RS torches and stone blocks" because that is inefficient and takes up loads of space. They can also transfer signals horizontally like dust, but will damage you if you touch them and even cause fires (see below).
4. Flame on!
-My logic behind the damage over time is that normal redstone dust is too weak/spread out to cause any harm, but when concentrated into a block the amount of energy can be lethal. This amount of energy can also, unfortunately, ignite nearby flammable blocks that are touching it and will also melt snow. This fire-spreading means that players have to be careful with their RS blocks and adds a considerable trade-off to using them.
EDIT: 5. Toggleable light
-This is yet another already suggested idea, but has been brought together with the others above. The amount of light would be equal to that of a torch, but wouldn't be overpowered due to all of the downsides listed above/below. The logic is that normal redstone/RS torches don't make much light because they only contain a small amount of energy, but when clumped into a block they have a higher amount of overall energy and can thus create more light. This allows us to have a more attractive form of lighting areas than torches or glowstone (but it makes less light than glowstone) at the cost of damaging/igniting anything that touches it.
TL;DR
The pros:
-Can transfer signals vertically (as well as horizontally, [same distance as dust])
-Can damage enemies (and YOU) that touch them (more attractive alternative to cactus walls, and can be turned off)
-Ignites blocks and mobs (including YOU) that touch them
-Emits the same amount of light as a torch (when powered of course)
The cons:
-Can ignite YOU and flammable blocks
-Can damage/kill YOU
-Costs a lot more than redstone dust for circuits, more than cactus for damaging, and more than torches for lighting.
If I helped in any way, don't click that little green +, instead tell me how much you liked the post. (Only those who are incapable of earning rep the hard way have to beg for it in their signatures).
i think you should be able to make 2 extra portals(you can only make the portals inside the nether one with lapislazuli blok and one with redstone blok(wich doesn't exist jet(but could be)).
What would those two new portals even do? Just take us back to the overworld? We already have obsidian portals for that.
