I suggest improving furnaces by giving them a third appearance that only occurs when it has just finished smelting an object, but only if the player has not accessed it yet.
Currently furnaces have two appearances: dark and fiery. The third mode would be "cooling embers."
In that mode the bottom of the furnace would glow a very dim dark red. There would be no flames. It would only occur when a furnace stops working and still has smelted objects in it to remove. As soon as the player removes the finished product or adds more fuel/raw materials it would switch back to either dark or fiery.
The purpose of this would be to aid players by signaling which furnaces need to be checked on. This would let them easily tell between furnaces that finished a job and furnaces that weren't recently used.
you can tell when a furnace is done because the flames would be gone
but it would look pretty cool
You can tell whether a furnace is off or working. But you can't tell between an empty furnace and a furnace that just finished smelting something.
The idea is that if you have a room full of furnaces, smelt some iron bars in one, when you come back to check on it the recently used furnace will look different than the surrounding ones. That way you won't have to check several until you find the right one.
Or if you just have one furnace, this is still a good reminder that you need to check on it. "Oh, glowing red? I better see what I left in there."
I have been thinking about suggesting a feature like this, but once again Reg. Hexahedron beat me to it. The only thing I would change is it should have an indicator if there is anything in it at all, not just if there is something in the output.
