World Mode Suggestion Perfect for server owners and people that like building.
Before I go any further, I'm going to mention that this is a far out suggestion. I don't really expect it to happen, as much as I'd love it to. I was just messing around with my server, trying to figure out how I'm going to get these cities set up (it's an RPG server, see). And it dawned on me just how useful something like this would be.
So, I mocked up what it could look like in Photoshop, and gave a couple pointers along the way. Here you go:
So how could this be helpful? Well, I'm an owner on an RPG server. We want to have multiple towns/cities and villages. All connected with paths and roads and have it set up like an actually RPG. So far things are going great, with one huge problem. It's taking a very long time. :dry.gif:
I was wondering how I could speed up this process when I got this idea. I instantly thought of games like Age of Empires.
So when I want to build the farming city of Wayrest, normally I'd be using Fly Mod to scout out a good location from above, having two buddies slowly build a path from the mining town of Grimfort while the rest of us get to work on building fields, barns, houses, etc.
With something like this, I load up our World File, zoom out, find a good spot, tweak it a little with brushes, make a nice stream run through, drag in a bridge, some barns, some houses, a few fields. Then draw a path from, the now completed, Wayrest all the way to Grimfort. Save the world file, load it back into the server, explore my new town.
Now, I know that this is a big suggestion. And I know it's a lot to ask for. But I also know, as somebody who has dabbled in game design and as somebody with some common sense, that this is possible. Games have been doing this sort of thing for decades. And it would also be helpful, very helpful.
I have no idea how you will all take to this concept, I don't really have any expectations that it will happen (as much as I'd kill to have it). But I have too much time on my hands for my own good and figured I'd put this idea out there.
This looks like a rad idea! I'm going to go back and finish reading it now. =3
More to come...
It would be awesome if this was possible in-game. That one could save a structure he or she built into a catalog. Then if he/she wanted to place them somewhere else, or place them multiple times it would allow for that. Though when you mention it out of the game, like taking the map down and then putting it back up, well then I think this is basically already possible via MCEdit.
Well, I was thinking like a separate game mode. One specifically for editing, since that way it wouldn't have to simulate much and would increase performance big time.
But I'm going to look in to MCEdit a bit more, I never really gave it much interest. Possibly to my own disadvantage.

I see what you mean. Though different from that I think it would be pretty cool to be able to enable or disable it on multiplayer servers, so people would be able to insert their cataloged structures and such. It would also be nice so that after someone built a quality building on a server he/she could save save it in the catalog and then when that lame server shuts down he/she won't have to be upset that all their work was for nothing because it could now be placed in a new server.
