Two Ideas I have been thinking about for a bit of time involving Glowstone and Lanterns.
First, with Glowstone, it seems odd to me that you mine a glowstone block and receive 1-4 glowstone dust. By combining 4 glowstone dust you receive glowstone. No smelting is required, and no other material is needed.
Secondly, glowstone seems to be one of the more popular terrain files to change to something more decorative to enhance building interiors.
So my thought is, use the default terrain texture for glowstone in the nether. When it is mined it will continue to drop dust. This dust can be combined in a furnace to reproduce it's original form.
And here is the new part. Combine the dust with wood planks to form a modified glowstone block similar to what many people have suggested in their retextures, a wooden framed block with glowing panes.
My second idea involves the idea of a Lantern.
Instead of having Ghasts drop gunpowder, (do we need two mobs dropping the same thing?), have them drop Nether Coal. Nether Coal would be an infinitely burning coal item that can be used with other to be determined materials to craft a lantern.
This would make for a decorative, persistent alternative to torches, and allow for the implementation of torches being non persistent. It would also be somewhat difficult to acquire depending on your ability to kill ghasts. Oh, and another reason to visit the nether.
Feel free to comment on my ideas, suggest possible tweaks or tear it all down and stomp on it.

An 'infinitely' burning coal would be a little much don't you think?

Don't you only get up to three dust per glowstone mined? If not, then I have really horrible luck when mining it.

Why not just have glowstone work as is but let the dust be craftable with glass and wood/iron (I think iron would look more lantern-like) to make (multiple) lanterns?

Infinitely burning? Not a good idea. Also, it is confirmed that lanterns will be made out of glowstone. What could work would be to craft coal and netherrack into much longer-burning nethercoal, which would be craftable into wooden lanterns that would have to be relit much less often that torches. I do agree though that Ghasts should drop something more interesting.

For the Glowstone Block, I just would like to see a craftable decor block, wood or iron or both would be fine with me.
I like your idea about the changes to the nethercoal. I still think Ghasts dropping a commponent would be useful.
I don't really think a decoration light block besides glowstone is that necessary. A more decorative lantern would be good though. My current thoughts are as follows:
Torches burn out every couple days.
Wooden lanterns are craftable from Nethercoal, wood, flint and steel, and possibly redstone. They would go out occasionally but would be relightable by right clicking them. Alternatively, redstone currents being applied to them would turn them on or off.
Lanterns are craftable from glowstone dust, iron, and glass and never go out.

If only I could aim.

In my idea, it would only be used as a material in Lanterns.
If so, the idea for how to fuel the lantern could still work.
Comments in bold.
My droprate on Glowstone Dust is probaly wrong.
