Currently, I make a sort of "barbed wire" around my house out of cactus. It is useful, and effective against most mobs. They usually run right into the wall of cactus.
However, I kind of dislike using cactus, as they do not look as Aesthetically pleasing around my house. Also, I can not make a straight wall of cacti, I have to make it a zig-zag, also not as aesthetically pleasing, and if that is not all, we can only place cacti on sand.
I thought up of a better way to utilize the cacti's "Wire" ability: Barbed fences.
These would not be any different from real fences, aside from having a few patches of cacti spines on it.
To make this, I propose that we craft the cactus first, and get four cactus spines. Then, we combine it with Wooden fence to make barbed Fence. One cactus spine and wooden fence make one barbed fence.
NOTE ONE THING: Barbed fences Will Not cover another square block like a normal fence would. Meaning that you could jump on the fence. You will need to stack them if you want to preventing people jumping the fence (Though I don't know who would be stupid enough to jump on a barbed fence anyways =P)
The advantages of this:
•A good defence wall:
It would work exactly like cactus, except now you don't need to form them in a zig-zag pattern
•More Aesthetically pleasing:
I don't think anyone actually likes to have square green blocks in an unorganized fashion all over their house. Neither do I think anyone prefers to mix sand and grass together. It looks ugly in my opinion.
•You can stack them:
A cactus only goes up to three feet high if you plant it yourself. Yes, we all have the ability to put sand on top of it, and plant another cactus, but consider the above advantage; Is that really pleasing to look at?
So you are able to make a wall of barbed fence, and make your house spider free, we could say.
The Disadvantages:
•Nerfs the Spider mob:
Making a wall out of barbed fence to surround your house will most probably make the spider's climbing ability useless. One way out of this is to only allow two barbed fences stacked together?
I cannot find any other disadvantages. If you find a disadvantage, make sure to point it out to me.

really good idea. you could make it a mod, and have it be a wall mod. if you added more features, then you could make it a mod. Ideas would be:
guards to surround your house.
walls with lava moats (has drawbridge).
and more.

No, I have no experience with modding. I could probably type this thread onto the mods forum and hope to get a reply, but I don't want it to be a mod. I would like it to be implemented in the vanilla Minecraft. That's just where i'd want to see it, coming from no outside files.
I was thinking that instead of being a normal fence only with spikes coming off it, which might look a bit silly, it could have the horizontal beams that appear when you place fences next to each other replace with a 2D barbed wire texture.
This is what i'm suggesting. I'm suggesting it to react and be just like any normal fence (Aside from holding an invisible area on top of them), but with green patchs on the fence that resemble the cactus skin kind of.
You're suggesting that the normal fence is used, but with a texture change to represent cactus bits on it. The effects are fine but the appearance sounds odd.
I'm suggesting that only the normal 'upright post' part of the fence is used, and the horizontal posts are replaced with a 2d barbed wire texture. So that it looks like an irl barbed wire fence.
Oh, well that's a good idea too. That sounds kind of better actually. Sorry for not understanding you earlier.

Heres my version of this idea:
Use shears with a cactus to get 'Spikes'
Now go to a crafting table and fill one row with spikes, this will create 8 linked barbs.
Now make some fences.
Take the made fences and put them in the middle collum bottom, take the linked barbs and place it above the fence.
Now you have barbed fences.
