A poltergeist is a phenomenon in which something takes manifestation in inanimate objects (f. ex. a book, a car et cetera). Poltergeist-events have been explained to occur during a teen's puberty, due to the massive energies being released. It's counted as a ghost.
Anyways, the 'Geist-mob will not be a scary mob, however, I suggest it's more of a nuisance than dangerous. Like the upcoming Endermen, it can move blocks, but not while you are close (approx. 10-16 blocks or so). It will sometimes do a charge on you, causing you to loose your items, and even write random signs (Won't be implemented, I know.) with random messages of DOOM.
The Poltergeist is almost invisible. However, wearing a pumpkin on your head let's you see a troublesome spirit (A transparent human) and can chase him out by hitting him with diamond tools. (888888Zombies suggested gold instead, which is way better.)
Poltergeists can spawn everywhere and anytime, but for a poltergeist to spawn inside a shelter, the player must have died at least a few times inside the house OR have a lot of netherrack and other things from the Nether.
or maybe they only spawn when you have made a portal
so like ghasts are the parents of these things and they send them out through the portal to plauge your land?
Nah, I doubt that would work. Poltergeists are an (almost) independent phenomenon in the real world and should stay as such in the Overworld of Minecraft, I think. If they had Ghast overlords, it would just be easier to give them TNT. I just want the 'geists to be something annoying, not to be a part of a giant spiritual army!
sounds like fun. I can just see players coming home after a long day (or days if your like me and get lost) and finding a new doorway to there home.
some points: What would be classed as a 'house' and not a cave or cavern, and also something would need to keep trak of what how many times you died, or you've killed a mob, maybe a score board, I think there is one already somewere.

The spawn inside shelter is not easy to add. in fact, none had suceed. this is like a less dangerous herobrine(which is already a mod). it can get in and control a block to move.(cannot control water, lava, fire, leaves or any ores) think. one day you return to your house and found that your workbench is wandering aimlessly around the house! isn't that weird? xD it can also set off fires, place TNTs and place lava, probally ruining your house. the only way you can damage it is by wearing an pumpkin helmet(usually people doesn't use a pumpkin as a helmet but it needs to be done here.) and have gold tools in order to see and kill him. if you killed him things will go slient for a minecraft week, but after that he returns with anger and causes more trouble! he will also prevent you from getting gold and pumpkin in any ways(placing lava around it, raising it in air,or to cover it with blocks) after the first time he died.the only way to prevent that little troublemaker to blow your house up with TNTs is to place a gold block! it has a protection range of 7x7x10 and protects everything in that radus, thus preventing plotergeist to get in,place or control in this area. Good suggestion.

The spawn thing can easily be fixed, as we can say it now requires ONLY nether-based blocks to be placed in range of the player-placed blocks. However, the gold-idea was actually better than my diamond-suggestion. But the gold block would be WAY too easy to create. No, we need two blocks of gold, stacked on top of each other. And yes, I drew some inspiration for the 'geist from the Herobrine mod (My underwear is still brown).
But, always a but, he won't do anything that can damage you directly, as somehow stated in the original post. So the TNT would be dismissed entirely if we follow that. But that he can burn the house/statue/something with fire is an excellent example of indirect harm.
New idea: What if there's 1-6% chance for a Poltergeist to spawn in a random meeting of blocks every time a chunck is loaded? This would make it a second/third way to encounter a Poltergeist.
Whenever you place a block near or at the point of spawn, the phenomenons can begin at once.
I know it was suggested by someone but has another name... If i remmeber right it was ghoul or something like, but it has the same idea. I like it :smile.gif:
Yeh, You guys know Ambience right? Those cave noises? Well maybe you could only encounter him in a cave or while mining. At the time if you're wearing a pumpkin helm (which, when mining is a stupid idea) you can see and possibly kill him. But if you don't he follows you out of the cave and starts causing havoc. This would make it easier to implement as ambience is already loaded into minecraft.
Note: the 'Geist might look like a miner while your wearing a pumpkin to represent the soul of a dead miner. And 'Geists only spawn under layer 32 or something.

Feel free to add.

Perhaps the sentient mob you've killed the most (Creepers, Pigmen etc.) would appear if so.

Or we can have both, with different prefixes.
