I doubt anyone has suggested this before but I think it would be cool to have smooth stone sticking out of the ground in some areas as rock would in the real world. This could be used for the same purpose as digging underground. I'm thinking that the size could be from 3 blocks high to a kind of large hill. This idea is extremely simple and maybe somewhat pointless, but it would help make terrain in MC look a bit more interesting.
I have actually seen things simillar to this with the current world generation. I like to build in deserts. I see this most often in deserts and sometimes else where. However, I still do not see it that often.
I do not know if it is intended or not. I do not know if I'll continue to see them after the 1.8 update either, since the world generation code is changing.
First off, smooth stone, as well as coal and iron ore already stick out of the ground occasionally via cliff faces. If you're speaking of smooth stone generating as a single block above the ground, it would look ugly. If you had circular shapes made of stone (boulders) in mind, I think they would also look ugly.

If youve ever been outside past towns and cities then youll know that there isnt alwas grass covering stone. By the way I know rhere areplaces where there is stone right out in the open but one it isnt common and two its just weird. Also just saying Im typing on a Kindle...dont ask why.
I kinda wish there were random boulders sticking out of the ground and near shorelines since most of my vacations in Northern California have including climbing the rocky cliffs near the beach.

I think the suggestion is great, just not for Minecraft. It's hard to make a decent looking boulder with 1m x 1m cubes (at least not without resorting to making a massive large-scale boulder). Also, I'm not speaking exclusively of spherical boulders, I speak of rock formations of any kind.
There's nothing to suggest, sometimes you see bare stone and ore sticking up out of grass or dirt or sand or whatever it is you happen to be standing in.

Thats what this suggestion is aiming at.
