Now many of us modders know how frustrating (and frustratingly common) ID conflicts are! There is modloader and ID resolver but not all mods use modloader and some of us just can't get ID resolver to work! If Minecraft had a way to resolve it for you, the (Minecraft) world would be a better place. I suggest adding a folder to the Minecraft bin that allows mods to be dragged (or copied, or cut, or pasted, or duplicated) into the folder using the Mod's name as the file name for the corresponding mod within the folder. This way .class files won't be overwritten and you don't need to make back-up jars! The game should utilize the "Texture Packs and Mods" menu and allow you to select mods you want and unselect those you do not! If there is an ID conflict, Minecraft will override the Default ID for the modded item and give it one that is open for use. A feature I'm convinced would be necessary would be the config/properties text files (ex: randomobs.properties) for all the mods to tweak them to you needs.
For those who are lazy and didn't read this relatively short post, or for you who like outlines and summaries: here are the main ideas:
-Mods will be installed for you
-Item ID conflicts will be solved
-No more crashed games
-Mods won't overwrite each other
-No need to uninstall unwanted mods, you can just unselect them
-no need for back up jars
Please post any comments, ideas to improve this idea, questions, or "bumps"!

It could possibly be set up so that IDs are XX###, the X's represent a mod number (the mods would either receive their number when "installed" or something, and 00 would be original items), then the #'s would be the items ID so 00001 would be Stone currently and 01001 would be an item in the first mod in the "list".

thats a good idea!
