Here is my suggestion on a how a leveling type system could work in Minecraft. There will be 3 different areas that you can apply skill points in you can either go full in one or mix n match to your play style. With applying more points in a certain skills increases there effectiveness and can lead to better skills for that area. There would be a cap level uyou reach so you can not get all skill set you have to pick and choose. And some of the better skills could only be unlocked when you have enough points in a certain area.
The 3 areas would be Warrior, Scout and Miner.
The warrior focuses on combat. Some skills
Things like increased damage. i.e. Slash lvl 1 Swords do 2 extra damage. lvl 2 does 4 etc.
Increased crit %
The Scout focuses on exploration.
Things like maybe increase Line of sight.
Villages are more likely to be friendly to you.
And higher skills could even be a mini-map on your screen.
The Miner focuses on resources.
Lowers the chance of Silverfish coming out of blocks when you mine
Better exchange rates at the NPC village
Higher skill would be like- A type of metal detector which helps you find veins easier.
I know this probably wont get included. But tell me what you think.
I personally get really sick of skill trees etc really fast on games so I think that every time you level up you should gain:
You do more damage
You break blocks faster
You can see slightly more in the dark
Less chance of silverfish
Faster travelling speed
Food adds more to health bar
Less damage from monsters and falling
Maybe even torches giving off more light
Obviously if these were added to the game, it would need tweaking for multiplayer such as not having the torch aspect etc.
I think any of these would be great; not so much as torches blinding you with light but just a tiny tweak brighter, and half a heart less damage, and a tweak breaking blocks faster. It would be stupid to make leveling up a game changing addition but just to reward you slightly for playing well.
And also having these being leveled up in an appropriate order such as maybe:
More damage
Food
Travelling
See more
Less silverfish
Less damage
More light
Breaking blocks
Or whatever seems most appropriate for the majority of activities you will carry out in-game.
I will repost this on other Posts also beacause I think this would be a great opportunity to make minecraft reward you to make surviving more convenient. Comment if you agree

You start at level 0
you have to level from 0 - 15
0 - 15 will add to normal stuff ( speed , jump , swimming etc. )
When you reach 15 you will have to choose your path , and then when you level you get the things you mentioned on your post.
