I know this idea has already been mentioned, but I just want to put my own spin on this.
The basic idea is an expansion of the nether, which, as I'm sure most of us know, has 5 things unique to it:
Netherrack, which burns forever
Soul Sand, which slows you down
Glowstone, which glows
Zombie Pigmen, which attack as a group if you attack them
and Ghasts, which are the incarnation of evil
While those things are cool, I really don't think that it's worth getting 3 diamonds and 14 obsidian (I know you only need 10, and you can use molds, but I prefer not to) just to go to the nether.
Thus, my plan is to expand the nether not only to make it liveable, but to make it a fun challenge to go to with more resourses.

Blocks
I was planning on making the nether a copy of the real world in several ways. Most of the real-world blocks will be made into nether versions, just like how netherrack=stone, soul sand=sand and glowstone=cobblestone? (same texture)
Also, since each of them have their own special features, (netherrack burns forever, ss slows you down, etc) these blocks will have something special as well.
Natural
DemonSoil (Dirt) Mined with flamewood shovel or higher.
Most easily found resource in the nether. Absorbs light, making a 3x3 block area aound it darker than the others. Useful for cool effects. Texture to be added.
FlameTrees
FlameBark (Raw Wood) Mined with diamond axe or higher.
The basic ingredient in Flametrees. Can be crafted into all of your favorite materials, flame style. Every flametree block is completely fireproof, so you can build a wood house out in a lava ocean.
Flameleaves (Leaves)
Can be cut from Flametrees using Myren (iron) shears. Is the equivalent of fire, can be placed down and any flammable material nearby will catch fire.
Flameseeds (splaings)
Must be planted on demondirt. Have a 1/3 chance of bursting into flame instead of growing.
-FlamePlanks (Wood PLanks)
2 are crafted from flamebark. Fireproof.
-NetherCrafter
Can craft nether items and blocks, unlike normal crafting tables. fireproof.
-Flameladder (Ladder)
Can be climbed twice as fast as normal ladders.
-FlamePlate (pressure plate)
Different Look.
-Flamedoor (door)
Fireproof
-Flamehatch (trapdoor)
Fireproof
-Flamestorage (chest)
Can be placed 3 together. Fireproof.
SoulStone (sandstone) Mined with Flamewood Pick or higher.
slows you down x8 (don't get caught on it when ghasts are coming) crafted with 4 soul sand.
Ghastgravel (gravel) Mined with Flamewood Shovel or higher.
Explodes when hit by an exposion (think several TnT) Be careful around ghasts and creepers. May drop sparker.
Spirit Silt (clay) Mined with flamewood shovel or higher.
Only the bottom half is walkable, so you sink into it if you stand on it.
Soot (snow)
Crafted from 4 sootballs.
Iced SoulSand (ice-sand) Mined with flamewood shovel or higher.
You move 2x as fast on it, opposite of soulsand.
Frostrack (ice-stone)
netherrack found in the frozen biome. Freezes all water and lava up to 5 blocks away. Stops melting.
Pumice (ice)
Found on the top layer of the lava level in the Frozen biome. Lava frozen by Frostrack. Breaks when you step on it.
Manufactured
Spirit Stone Block (bricks)
Crafted from 4 Spirit Stones. Glows at light level 7.
Soul Glass (glass)
Smelted from Soul Sand. Has a brown tint.
Flamewood Shelf (bookshelf)
Made from magma books. Decoration.
Myren Block (Iron Block)
Gray. Crafted from 9 myren. Storage/decoration.
Nemoln Block (Gold Block)
Dark Red. Crafted from 9 nemoln.
Zimalon Block (diamond block)
Teal. Crafted from 9 Zimalon.
Xiriion Block (Better than diamond block)
White/black. Crafted from 9 Xiriion (good luck!).
Thanks for all of the support!
This was originally going to be a mod, but then when I got to the actual "making" of the mod, I was like, well crap. SO mow it's just a suggestion. If someone could make this, it would be awesome (I know about the nethercraft mod, but it could use some...improvement).
The reason I think that you should need a diamond axe is to make sure that you're prepared to go to the nether. AS it stands now, you could, in theory, go to the nether with only stone tools. In my idea, you would need to have at least found 3-6 diamond to do anything (3 for a pick, 3 for an axe). That way, all of the awesomeness of the nether would be more difficult to get, thus making it more balanced.
Honestly, I don't like the idea of the Nether just having blocks that copy those of the overworld. I also don't like the idea of the Nether blocks requiring tools that can only be found in Nether. It's like, you spend x amount of time getting 3 diamonds and 10 obsidian, just to start all over again in Nether. Also, copying the regular world into Nether makes Nether perfectly habitable, which means you would never have to leave. So basically, the regular world would become useless and its only purpose would be to get to Nether.
In my opinion, the Nether should be a place that is home to the really rare and creative blocks. It should have above ground dungeons, or something to that extent, that are very difficult to conquer, but if you do, you get rare items that can only be obtained that way. Things like flame swords, or picks that instantly smelt materials when you mine a smelt-able material with it, things like that. And if anything can be made from Nether materials, it could just be things that help you get around Nether, like some kind of material used to make lava boats, or a really strong block that you can use to make bases or something that are near immune to the bothersome ghasts.
Basically, I think the Nether should be its own area with its own specific items, not just a slightly edited copy of the regular world. (I'm not trying to attack your idea with that statement, so don't take that the wrong way.)

As a whole or just the diamond axe part? Because as a whole, it kinda ruins the flow of the idea.
Chests are already fireproof
