You want to connect two things. One on top of a pillar. One at the bottom of it.
How do you connect them?
You need to make a bunch of stairs that may look messy depending on what you are building.
This will make redstone circuits easier and simpler to make. No messy blocks needed to be stacked up just to connect two redstone-powered objects.

SEE THAT PONY THERE? YEAH, DAS MY OC. SO **** YOU.
but that takes up more space than a 1x1 tunnel going up. Sure its AS, but its a good idea. Also, it could use a bit of work
Actually, it's a 2x1 tunnel going up, as the redstone takes up one block.
Also, it's more efficient to do it this way.

I am the bone of my sword
Steel is my body, and fire is my blood
I have created over a thousand blades
Unknown to death, Nor known to life
Have withstood pain to create many weapons
Yet, those hands will never hold anything
So as I pray, Unlimited Blade Works
