The following idea is an absolute brain fart. Haters gonna hate on a sombrebro.
As you may know, in only thing that isn't in Minecraft that is in the real world is a sombrero. This is very scary of a concept, as sombreros are the stuff of legend. Here is my proposition to change this.
Properties
Crafting:

WWW
.W.
Sombreros can't be stacked.
Usages Usage as a sliding craft:
Because sombreros are perfectly smooth surfaces on the underside, and their inexplicable ability to double as seats, sombreros can be tossed about to be used as sliding surfaces. Players can toss out sombreros with right-click, and upon contact with the ground sombreros become temporary rafts or sleds. The player doesn't automatically hop in the hat, though, so the player must quickly throw it down and right click into it immediately after. If tossed in water, they start without momentum, and can be only used to float downstream quickly. If tossed on land, they can be used to slide down hills quickly. After tossing, they have enough momentum to slide around 15 blocks, but they can be ridden off the grid, giving them a very situational advantage over mine carts. After decreasing elevation they earn more momentum to move around another 7 squares. The sombrero is considered a tool, though, and sliding is very costly to the durability, wearing out over around 100 blocks covered on land. It doesn't wear out as a raft. The player has no control over the direction of the sombrero on land, and can only slightly adjust momentum in water.
Usage as equipment:
Since sombreros were the inspiration for modern parachutes, it makes since to include this feature in the digital emulation, at least partially. Wearing a sombrero on your head doesn't completely save your fall into the eternal abyss, but simply helps you get there on your own time, and making the lava at the end of it more painful than the fall. Sombreros slow your fall slightly, and cut fall damage by around 1/3. Falling decreases durability.
Wearing sombreros on your back aren't just a great storage for them, but are a great way to cheaply protect your back. They defend against attacks from behind about as well as an iron chestplate, but do nothing against attacks from the side or front. This makes them useful for mining or punching logs into tiny bite-sized bits that expand on command. Any damage received decreases durability.
Usage as a thrown item:
If the sombrero hits a mob before it hits the ground when thrown, some mobs receive special effects from the throw.
Creeper:
If the sombrero hits a creeper before landing, the creeper wears the sombrero on its head and commences pinata mode. When the creeper goes into pinata mode, it jumps higher and moves faster. It's almost like the creeper is in a permanent state of fleeing. The creepers health boosts to 100 hearts, and it can't attack. Basically, killing the creeper after tossing a sombrero is a minigame. On death, the creeper explodes into fireworks and drops candy, maracas, or fireworks.
Cactus:
If a sombrero is tossed onto a 2-high stack of cactus blocks, the cactus becomes a cactus golem. Cactus golems sport two small jointed arms, almost cartoony eyes, and a sombrero. They only move in jumps. They only hang around cultivated plants, and they attack any mobs that come near the plants.
Spider:
Beware, tossing sombreros on spiders makes them harder to kill. They are given more health, and they constantly jump up and down, shooting string at the player. If the string hits, the player is knocked forward into the spider, whom hits him on contact. They can no longer be knocked back. They drop 0-1 lassos as their only drop.
Skeletons:
Skeletons simply wear the sombrero on their head. They wear guitars on their backs, and their arrows leave confetti trails.
Zombies:
Zombies just wear the sombreros on their heads and have maracas in their hands.
Consequences
Maracas:
Maracas can be shaken with a right-click. Shaking maracas orders passive mobs and companions to move where the maracas were pointing. It's tough to use, though, because sometimes if you want to split up a group going in two directions, you may accidentally move too little or too many. That's because it orders all passive mobs in x radius around you to move. It doesn't just select every passive mob that you've rendered or anything.
Firecrackers:
Firecrackers can be dropped by festive creepers, and are single-use explosive weapons. Firecrackers explode into smaller damaging particles. They explode on contact or over a certain distance. Firecrackers can be stacked into sets of 14. They'd be great for attacking dragons, because they shotgun them, and the particles can be used as a very short term air mine.
Lassos:
Lassos can be used as fishing poles on mobs. They can also be used on blocks in two ways. On specifically chosen "weaker" blocks, the lasso can drag blocks in the direction of the player, (rounded to the nearest 90 degree angle). On "strong" blocks, the opposite occurs. The player is dragged in the direction of the block, (not rounded). Making it a grappling hook or a swing. 'Twould make great Indi Jones moments.
I may be adding lassos as an extension to this idea soon, because I may not give it enough info to warrant it as its own thread.

Edit:
Section of the post for my old words
Usage as a tossable:
Tossing sombreros on certain mobs have certain effects. Tossing sombreros onto creepers render them useless, and make them drop maracas or firecrackers on death. Tossing them onto skeletons makes them equip the sombrero on their head. Shaking maracas near skeletons make them semi-tame. They will attack anything you attack, but if the sombreros are knocked off by other mobs, they become evil again. Sombreros tossed onto mobs cannot be earned back. They also despawn and don't teleport, unlike doggies. Throwing a sombrero onto an Enderman makes him wear it on his face, rendering him useless for one or two seconds. They cannot start attacking, and they attack blindly if they already began. THey also instantly drop whatever they're carrying, making it great to carry on your nightly castle-guarding route. Tossing sombreros onto passive mobs causes them to become pinatas. In becoming pinatas they follow you, have less health, and enemies prioritize them. I'm still thinking of other mobs that can benefit from a little fiestivity.
I can no longer play Minecraft without sombreros...
I've had these feelings too, for the past few days, so I've resorted to wearing a sombrero while playing, to bide the time before this feature is implemented. I hope I've helped remedy your withdrawals!
I honestly don't care if I'm banned for this. I want people to see this idea, because it's simply wonderful. You know you want this. Show me some love before I get warned.
a bit OP, but I think it's pretty funny. I would like to be able to give those festive skeletons guitars, trumpets, and a few other instruments, to make myself a mariachi band in the Mexican restaurant I would certainly make. Creative idea.
Thanks for the support. I knew in the back of my mind that no one would dare challenge the practicality and use of the sombrero. I've just realized that sombreros would be great for nomads, but they don't have time to farm enough wheat for a sombrero set. I guess they'll just have to be used for casual spelunkers, unless anyone has any crafting alternatives for it. Maybe they could be made with string and dyes. Of course, for such a cost they'd need to be more durable. Any ideas?
Edit: Also, coolio, I think I know you're implying it, but can you formally say you support or write something out about your opinion for it? I'd hate to be rude if you were praising my train of thought but disliking the sombrero itself.
But what's not funny is the lack of views on this thread. I'm speaking both in the form of opinions on the matter and the amount of times this thread has been visited. Tell it to yo' frands.

Updated OP with poll and changed the subtitle.
The poll is biased. The no is interpreted as "I like them to much so that I have to avoid the temptation by not having them in Minecraft" and the yes is interpreted as "I like them so much that I can't live without them" thus both are saying that the person likes the idea. I like the idea (minus the tamed skeletons), but I will not vote in the poll until it is fair.
I recommend having a "yes", a "yes, but with changes", and a "no". You can just have a "yes" and a "no", but then people who like part of the idea would vote "no" instead of "yes, but with changes". If you add another poll question (such as asking what changes people want), you'll want to throw in an "I'm not sure" in both because poll voters have to vote in all polls to submit their vote, and if their isn't one, people who only want to vote for one will either pick a random one in the other questions (making the results somewhat untrustworthy) or not vote in the poll at all (so you don't get everyone's opinion).
I like it a lot. However, uhh, the skeleton taming is too OP, and this will moat definitely never be added into vanilla. Too... random. But I still love it! A lot!!!
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I'm very responsible, when ever something goes wrong they always say I'm responsible.
Last one went well, grow this one too!! HAHAHAHA!!!
It was meant to just be a little bit of fun, but okay, I'll change it.
Edit: Also, when I said that sombreros can be knocked off of skeletons' heads, I meant if they get hit even once the sombreros get knocked off, and any feuds between the good skeleton and the bad skeleton or mob are resolved. This means you can't just lead your skeletons to war and watch them fight even after the hats are off. Does this make anyone feel better about the balance of skeletons?
Edit2: Or maybe having the skeleton's hat knocked off by another mob lets them duke it out as two evil mobs that accidentally hit each other.
I very much want this idea to pass through. I actually spent time on it, compared to other ideas out there, so I don't care if I get banned for excessively endorsing my own thread.
Tossing sombreros on certain mobs have certain effects. Tossing sombreros onto creepers render them useless, and make them drop maracas or firecrackers on death.
Perhaps creepers would turn into "pinatas" when sombreros are tossed upon them: they'd have a lot of health (50? that's 12 hits with an iron sword or 25 with arrows), run around considerably faster than the player, and make no attempt to go after or attack the player. Upon death, they explode, but deal no damage to the player or blocks. Instead they shoot out several firecrackers and a marca or two several blocks.
Whenever the player "pinatified" a creeper, they'd end up chasing it around, attempting to outmaneuver or corner it (although it is faster, it doesn't try to run away from the player and will turn randomly, like a regular creeper wandering sped up). The player can also shoot arrows at it, which will stick in it rather than disappearing, and fly out (in item form, so it won't damage/kill the player) when the festive creeper explodes. The arrows would not knock the creeper back, so if the player is shooting arrows at it, he/she still gets a chance at catching up to it.
If that isn't fun enough, Mexican style music would play in the background whenever the player is near to the pinata creeper.
I'm not sure if Mojang would ever add this to the game, but it would be really awesome as a mod, and maybe if it gets enough support, Mojang will consider adding when the next major Mexican holiday comes around.
