Simply put the mirror block can redirect sun light (sun less only, no reflections , no complicated stuff).
It can only make 90 degree turns, east to up/down/north/south, (no weird angles).
Only sunlight can be reflected means if a cloud comes by or a storm or night fall anything that was using mirrors is now dark. No sun, no light.
Light in the mirror is a beam, not a spread, meaning the beam is bright but the light decreases in brightness 2x or 3x faster than normal light.
A future thought on mirrors would be a splitting mirror, a block that splits the light into 2 beams in opposite directions.
east to (north and south). (but the light beams brightness is cut by half)
Issues i see are
what happens when the mirror block is unloaded.
I suggest it is then considered night.
What if the light goes through to many chunks.
I suggest giving it a max distance, maybe a configuration setting so lag can be controlled on servers.
Does the beam of light burn mobs.
I suggest only a direct beam can, and if a mob is burning in the beam then the light is blocked, isf the mob leaves the beam then the mob stops burning.
Who says it has to be a straight mine? 8 mirrors = 8 turns in the mine, 30 mirrors = 30 turns.
Possible other uses:
Minecart tunnel, use 2 mirrors to light it up all day, and it is dark at night. Gives more options then just lighting the tunnel with just torches.
And why does it have to be vital? What makes something vital?
You can play all of minecraft without using an axe, does that mean axes should be removed for not being vital?
red stone wire is not vital, it just adds a fun game mechanic.
How about putting the mirrors on pistons and then you could start making yourself an LED display visible at night. (or a block in front of the mirror that gets in front of the mirror)
Ever make a mine with a glass ceiling that has a lake on top, adds an interesting lighting to the mine.
Could allow you to add a skylight to a mine or a house, or whatever that can actually fully brighten up your room.
You could know the time of day by looking at a mirror system in your mine (i know you could just use the watch, but who says you need one of those)
It also adds a light source to the game that is can suddenly vanish on you because of the weather, and you are in your mine.
Maybe a new type of mob killing device, mirrors and pistons to brighten up and then darken the spawning area.
These are ideas off the top of my head.
Did i miss anything if so just ask.

Why would this be vital?
If it isn't vital what purpose does it serve other then lighting mines?
Most people don't make straight mines. Elaborate more please?
