Ok sorry if someone has already suggested this, but here goes:
First off:
When you place two chests next to eachother, you get a Double Chest. So, how about making it so that placing a chest on top of another creates a Closet. It'll create variety and it'll also allow double chests that only require 1 block along the horizontal plane.
Secondly:
How about allowing us to create metal chests that have the same function as wooden chests, but allow us to more easily differentiate between the chests we own, aesthetically? Metal chests could require 8 Iron Ingots instead. Other chests could include:
- Stone Chest (8 Stone, since 8 cobblestone = furnace)
- Gold Chest (8 Gold ingots)
and, most interestingly...
World Chests:
- World Chest or Sacred Chest (8 Obsidian + 1 Glowstone; all World Chests have the same inventory)
Stone, Gold and World Chests can all be doubled up. World Chests take some time to destroy and, if you do destroy one, any excess items inside will pop out around that chest block, as like any other chest - UNLESS another World Chest exists elsewhere in the world (SSP feature only, of course, unless there's added a ownership system as well.
Imagine putting some items into your home-base World Chest and then going out into the frontier and picking up the same items from another chest. It's kinda like portals, just inventory-wise.
Here's an interesting comment from M_Unit (below):
Awsome ideas, especially the closet one, but i think that instead of iron and gold chests being just for asthetics, they should be like iron doors and somehow need a button/lever to open.
Not sure if I agree or not, but I think it deserves some contemplation.
World chest... I like that idea. I think it would take some programming though for all of them to be the same (according to my limited knowledge of java...)

Nah I don't think so. Have in mind that a chest is just a block that links to a given inventory interface that is created for each new chest. The difference with World Chests is that they all link to the same inventory that is created when the first World Chest is made.
It could create some issues for allowing double World Chests, but if so then there should be a reason why a single World Chest can't function as a double one, due to it's cost. That'll save the devs from going through multiple iterations of Ifs and Elses.
Shouldn't be hard to implement, but I don't know Java yet, either, so I couldn't tell for sure.
It's a good idea, but the gold one and the World chest are a little bit expensive just for aesthetics.
I like the closet idea. +1
I agree with regards to the Gold (I just put it out there because people are often willing to spend those resources to make things more varied and differentiable, besides later on Gold Ingots are often abundant enough for you to allow yourself 1 double chest made of 16 Gold Ingots).
The World Chest is a fundamental gameplay change alltogether. Read it again :wink.gif:
Very elegant selections. I like them. The world chest would be darned convenient, but on the other hand, it would undermine a lot of the transportation challenges I find so stimulating. I really like trying to devise logistical solutions, for rail and boat, but the world chest would make all of this unnecessary affectation.

Good point, Tom Tzu. This is why it's so expensive.
Have in mind that 8 Obsidian and 1 Glowstone is for 1 chest. You need at least 2 chests to get the effect. That means 16 Obsidian, or 32 Obsidian if you want them to be double chests, unless the single chest works as a double one. Then further chests in multiple locations to make the rail system etc redundant. But that's only after you've gotten a Diamond Pickaxe and gone to the Nether and mined some Glowstone.
But to address your point - Maybe the devs could make it restricted to 2 chests. First chest functions like a double chest and, once you get the second chest, you can't make anymore because the universe will collapse if you do, or something :biggrin.gif:

Or maybe creating a world chest automatically creates them in linked pairs. So you place one, and then you go somewhere else and place the other, and those two are always linked.

May the force be without you.

I do know some java, should be easy to implement. Single instance of the world chest class, all world chest blocks link to it.
