The Rough Idea:
4 new items or 1 switchable item - Chicken Trough, Cow Trough, Pig Trough and Sheep Trough. These Troughs will cause only that animal type to spawn close to that trough and that same animal type will not despawn when staying near it, either. A player can then control this further by placing fences around the Trough area so that the animals will be contained and not move out of the Troughs range (risking a despawn).
Restrictions:
Troughs can only be placed on dirt/grass and wolves will not spawn close to any Trough. Additionally, the area around the Trough could become a different-color green that ordinary grass, to show the player how much ground is actually covered. 1 Trough should have a spawn perimeter of 5x5 blocks - not too large and not too small either, maybe 7x7 at most.
Making a Trough:
You just need 5 Planks (alt. Wood Slabs) and 1 Water (Bucket). You can also create a Double Trough (similar to the Double Chest - 2 Troughs next to eachother), which will speed up the spawn rate to 200%.
If 4 separate Troughs are to be designed, then you need 4 separate blueprints as well. All require 5 planks/slabs and the following middle item:
Cow: Water (Bucket), the default blueprint. Chicken: Seeds Pig: Apple (making these available in SSP too) Sheep: Wheat
Important:
It's also important that the troughs won't cause spawns if it detects more than a certain number of animals in its vicinity, as to prevent too many animals to spawn over time.

Agree, but that would mean Mojang has had the same idea, and that makes it a good idea.
Except for the fact that an item that causes more mobs of type X to spawn and making passive mobs permanent are completely different ideas. Other than that though, they are close :tongue.gif:
I would like to see this in the game, but for feeding mobs rather than spawning them. Maybe sheep need to eat to make more wool, same for cows w/milk and chickens w/eggs. So you need to pen them up and keep them fed to get that stuff.

I just want to control the animals better. It's kinda annoying with regards to woolmaking, atm. Both in terms of having sheeps around AND in terms of finding enough flowers and whatnot that aren't renewable resources afaik. I think I heard something about roses and dandelions spreading though, not sure. Maybe in the 1.8 patch.
Anyways, back to animals. I'm not too worried about Cows because milk has limited uses and Leather is pretty useless once you get Iron. Chickens make feathers renewable, Pigs make good food and Sheep have wool.
Maybe they should even add a spider farm or let the cobwebs in 1.8 drop string when destroyed. Actually I'm gonna make a sepearate suggestion on that one, if it's not already up.
