With 1.8 coming out, I was thinking about different things to do besides farming, exploring, and mining. I ended up with beekeeping. Beekeeping would be simple, and could yield some worth while rewards.
Bee hives
bee hives would be found in the various forms of forests, hanging from a leaf block. The spawn 5-10 bees at a time. These bees will hover around the hive, and some times go out to a flower. They don't do anything to the flower, they just fly around it for a few seconds, then start to head back to the hive. You may be wondering "what does that accomplish?" Well, nothing for the bee. For you, it's the ticket to finding the hive. Follow that worker bee until they arrive back, and then collect the hive. But, that may not be too easy. Bees will sting you if they feel threatened. They do 1/2 a heart of damage, but a swarm may be able to mess you up.
Collecting the hive
after finding the hive, why wouldn't you want to collect it? To do this, it requires shears. When clicked using shears, or destroying the leaf block above it, the hive falls to the ground, and splats on impact. It leaves behind one honey comb, and one honey. What use is that? (Note: the bees will rebuild the hive in a place 10-15 blocks away.) Getting to the good stuff.
Now that you have your honeycomb, you want to know what to do with it. To ensure you don't run out of honeycomb and honey, start up a bee farm. To make a Hive box follow the recipe
that gives you one hive box. It's placed like a furnace, in that it has the window facing the player on placement. Now the hive box doesn't do anything without a colony slide, made like
that gives one empty colony slide. To put a colony onto the slide, place a honeycomb below an empty slide in the crafting grid. It gives one colony slide (not an empty one). To place the slide in the box, right click it while holding the colony slide. Now wait until you see a honeycomb in the window of the hive box, or possibly bees will fly around it, or possibly both. To retrieve the goodies from the hive box, right click it, like a jukebox. If you waited long enough, an empty colony slide, two honeycombs, and one honey pop out of the box. If you didn't, it just gives you the colony slide (not an empty one). uses for the drops Honey is rather useless alone, but could be useful with some other ingredients. One (and the only I can think of at this moment) use would be to put it on bread. This would make bread heal maybe 1-2 hearts more, or could fill the hunger bar more, after 1.8. Honeycomb is a bit cooler. The one use I can think of is to put it in the crafting grid to get a lump of wax. Wax would be used to make candles, or maybe for making little figurines. (I'm more fond of candles) Candles would be made the same way as a torch, but replacing the stick with wax, and the coal with string. This will give two candles. These candles look like the ones from the painterly pack (I hope you know what they look like) and give off the same light level as torches. What makes these special? They're just more expensive torches? These candles are able to be dyed. To dye a candle, it's the same way as wool, but obviously with a candle. The dyed candles would not be stacked together if they're different colors, and can't be dyed gray or black. The candles give of colored light, respective to the color they were dyed. This could have some cool uses, like having a haunted house with green lighting, or a disco club with various colors all over the place.
If you like the idea, vote and comment, don't let the thread die! If you don't like it, please tell me what I could do to make it better, or just a plain "I don't like it" is acceptable.

You can't make metre cubed pieces of rock get jiggy with each other, that's just WRONG.
To be honest i like this idea. Gives you more things to do besides the original farming :smile.gif: but for honey maybe you could combine it with mushrooms and water to make potions to restore the character back to full hearts? I dont know if that would be added but it's just an idea
Well what do you know... Thanks for showing me the mod, but I can't install mods, because I really doubt my computer could run them (I barely can play minecraft as it is. It'll be hell after 1.8) and this is the suggestions forum, and I wanted this in vanilla. But thanks for responding anyways.

Hm, wax would definitely be a good new material but it needs more than "just" candles as a use. Plus I hope that lanterns will give of colored light.
The figurine stuff is a nice idea. Similar to the paintings there could be a number of different figurines available that randomly appear when you place a "statue"-block.
Furthermore - if mob villages will be implemented in the game - one could maybe use wax to make masks. Wearing them you will be not recognized as a human in these villages and can move freely there. But they have only a durability of - maybe half a day or so - until they melt.
Unfortunately I can't think more uses of wax now. Or at least not of one which would improve the game.
But there is a mod that makes wax available. Maybe they had some ideas.
But another feature of bees could be to fight mobs. Maybe in areas around the hive evil mobs cold be stung but humans and animals not because they do not threaten the hive.
Also there could be a possibility to send the bees scouting. They could bring back information about stuff like resources, terrain, mobs etc.
This idea is pretty awesome--I'd install it if I didnt have such bad luck installing mods. XD
lol installing mods is pretty much hit and miss. Just make sure you have a back up of the original minecraft.jar file before you attempt. Youtube also has pretty decent tutorials for this kind of stuff :smile.gif:

Heh, I know XD
I have a tendency to screw even the simplest things up XD
Always think positively before attempting to do things :smile.gif: if you screw up just keep at it until you get it right lol
lol yeah--pfft I start school tomorrow--wish me luck X3 (That means less minecraft :c XD lol I dont play it as much as I draw and work on art, to be honest)
Anyways, Im working on a mc based picture. Would you like to see it on livestream?

Good luck with school lol, i start in about 2 weeks. Would the livestream be on J-tv? because i dont go on that site often and maybe we should start with pm's instead of spammin the forums lol xD
I like the idea, except the stuff with the colony slide is kind of... overkill for what should be a simpler task. I would drop everything with the colony slide, and make so you only get honey from the hive box. This makes so you have to go back and find where they rebuilt the hive and take that one as well, making it a bit more risky and challenging to get a large amount of hives.
