Redstone can be placed on the ground. It can carry a current, but offers resistance, so the signal strength decreases over distance.
Glowstone (dust) should act like Redstone when placed, but should not lose signal strength.
Gunpowder should be placeable, too. When gunpowder is powered with a Redstone signal, it should 'burn' (either with the stock flame animation above it, or a custom animation on the gunpowder wire skin) at some pre-defined rate. Basically, as a slow fuse. If it comes in contact with something, it could burn it or give it a signal.
The glow dust shouldn't be infinite, it should be twice as much as the redstone. Even though i don't use redstone that much, it's a pretty cool idea. :smile.gif:
I agree with the others about having overpowered glowstone. After you set up a base in the nether glowstone is rather easy to collect so maybe you can fuse glowstone and redstone to make it twice as long?

Alternatively, you could use new items:
Glowstone Dust + Redstone = Glowstone Wire
Gunpowder + Redstone = Slow Fuse
(Gunpowder + Redstone + Glowstone Dust = Quick Fuse?)
Ideas? Comments? It feels strange to me that something like this isn't implemented already, really.
