OK, I am fine with obsidian being hard as hell to mine, but it's the fact that it is really hard to look at, and perceive, that irritates me.
I mean, if you were to build anything out of obsidian, anywhere outside of daylight, it is nay impossible to tell its shape. This goes for almost all dark blocks. NTM, the breaking animation for obsidian is almost invisible due to the fact that obsidian is almost black.
SO, I suggest that obsidian be made brighter, or react to different light levels differently from other blocks... and that it have a stronger outline. AND, that the breaking animation react to the color of the block it is on.
Simple.

I am sure that you are at least a little bit envious of my pony-swagger.

you could get a texture pack. The painterly pack has magma streaked obsidian which looks pretty cool.
I have a texture pack, I suggested this to smooth out minecraft for those who never visit the forums, or are too scared to try to mod minecraft in any way.
You guys DO know that saying use a texture pack is warnable for the same reason saying use a mod is right?
I personally like the darkness, but would like to see it's breaking progress more easily. Maybe the breaking animation should be negative of the colors on the block, so you can always see it. Similar to how the cursor is.

Obsidian is actually very soft and easy to break. When you break it it always forms sharp edges.
We need obby throwing knives
Logic flaws with this: Off-topic entirely. Minecraft has no soft easily-broken obsidian. Only the obsidian that is harder than diamonds for some unfathomable reason.
Ontopic: I would enjoy seeing my progress on obsidian, so I can get ready to grab it from above the lava and get my water bucket out. Many a times I lost my obsidian to that infernal lava!

Maybe there could be a white breaking animation used for dark objects. A negative or inverted color overlay would make stone or cobble or something gray harder to see. Because gray inverts colors to gray.

Fair enough. Although I will say those break fast enough that I doubt it would matter too much. You basically only have that issue with the various stones, grey shades of wool, and the Steel Block.
Unless one has a very grey based texture pack O.O

I'm using Eldpack for my textures right now. The obsidian is really easy on the eyes. It's kind of like, dark stone.
