I created a nether portal at about sea level today (first one yay), and the portal on the nether side spawned waaaaaay up in the air, whereupon a ghast fireballed me off my little 2x3 obsidian platform and plunging to my death in a lake of lava. I'm now in the process of building a massive bridge/ramp from the asston of cobblestone i excavated from a 10x10 shaft i dug all the way to bedrock.
But my suggestion is this: is it possible, when generating the nether for the first time in the game, for there to be some kind of land generated around it?

yes usually it will generate so that way you are on land. It happens occasionally that you spawn in the air but it doesnt happen alot. i suggest making a enclosed tunnel. Ghasts wont get you that way. And ghasts cant see through glass so you can make windows :smile.gif:
good luck
