Yesterday, whilst playing in my map, I uncovered a previously unexplored section of a cave that I had previously gotten lost in. While exploring it I realized that I had become hopelessly lost and spent the next 45 minutes circling the same places before (finally) finding my out.
Seeing as there was no sort of guide to lead me out or in the correct direction, my mind jumped to a quick and easy solution.
THE LIFELINE!
Basically the general idea is a placeable anchor that could be crafted like so:
= 2 anchors
Whenever that is finished you would be able to place it at the mouth of a cave (or anywhere for that matter) and attach a rope to it.
Rope:
(Where is string.)
Once said rope is attached to the anchor you will automatically hold it in your characters hand. (or tie it around his/her waist.) As long as it is held or tied to your waist, it will track every block you pass over and mark it with a floating rope texture. (Similar to the fishing line, but able to round corners.)
When you run out of rope (every 1 rope item provides 15 blocks worth of coverage) it will fall to the floor, where you will have to either extend it by using another rope item or follow it back to the mouth of the cave so you can go home and make some more segments. When you follow it back to the place in which it fell off, you can add more pieces of rope to it by right clicking the end while holding the respective item (unattached rope).
After more segments have been added, right clicking it again (with anything aside from rope) will tie it around yourself, where it will resume it's primary function.
Since there is obviously a destination of interest or other end to your path, when you arrive there you will be able to plop another anchor down and attach the other end of the rope path to said anchor. (which is why you get 2 anchors/posts when you craft 1)
As you may have thought, attaching the end to the other anchor will cause it to connect the two, granting you a clearly marked rope line showing you the path between 2 or more points.
(It's basically 2 points with a particle effect of rope connecting them showing you how to get from point A to point B without getting lost in pre-lit sections you think are the right way.)
Let me know what you think!

Able to place anchors on walls and cielings/climb them.
Can skew the path by connecting ropes to multiple anchors, successfully creating branches in the path that lead to different points of interest.
I have an idea. What if you can place place another anchor mid rope, allowing you to bend the rope, and continue on from there. Say you are trying to line out 4x4 area. If you place anchors at each of the four corners, it will bend, creating a ring around the area.
Another idea, is able to put anchors on the wall, and connecting string to that. From there, you can climb the string, and go from one anchor to the other. This would be interesting in adventure maps, as well as provide a cool way of climbing the side of a cliff. You should also be able to climb up and down the rope, as long as the anchor is in a higher place. You can do this without having a second anchor.
