I suggest a piston-spike, which functions just like a piston, but instead of pushing blocks, it would break them. Thus, you can add one more step to industrial cobblestone making and certainly many other uses.
In addition, it would be nice to have some block that acts like a box, except it collects automatically whatever collectible item comes near it, or on it. This could be simply an open trunk.
Both elements would make automated farms much easier to handle.
Waiting for comments, improvements, and blueprints!
Instead of being forced to dig stone for the sake of getting stone, you'd make a "core", lava and water etc, and those piston-spikes would break them automatically; then the autocollect box would reception the collectibles. Just wait, you get a boxful of cobblestones!
Piston-pikes could be used as traps for mobs, and whatever they drop could also be collected in a similar way.
We also need wheels! Place piston-spike on wheels, and push it, and you can dig tunnels! Wheels could also be a way to move faster on land, which I would appreciate.
i think jeb was already talking about adding a spike block of some sort, but i think the functionality of your idea should be added.
second a conveyor belt can be made via redstone and pistons in a fairly simple way
so adding a conveyor belt block would take the fun out of making one with pistons,
BUT if it acted like a powered rail instead only with items i do think it would be a pretty good

yeah but you can already make those by pushing sand with a piston and putting your items on top of the sand, its really easy, if you need help just ask, but couldnt you just water?
I can imagine how that'd be built, yes. As to water, sure, but it takes way more efforts to make that, and it doesn't always work neatly. Convery belt blocks would be infinitely easier to use.
You can break blocks with your fist too, but wouldn't a diamond pick-axe be better? That's my sort of reasoning with this conveyor belt thing. In addition, I don't see how pistoned sand or water could push things uphill.

Another poster mentioned pistons used as conveyor belts, but I doubt they can push things uphill, unless, of course, you place pistons below objects and etc, but that gets quite complicated.
A powered convery belt sounds like a good idea. Eventually, we could have 100% automated factories (wait until I suggest contraptions that plant seeds and what not - how about adding a dispenser to a piston-spike and it'd plant seed automatically?).
If we could have piston spikes, redstone wires, and minecart wheels that we could build on, along with just wheels
that would be great for an autominer! I mean imagine you have a 2X3 Cart with wheels on it then have an engine on it (Maybe furnaces could count as engines!), then have the spike pistons auto go in, out (it comes in slowly then juts out then comes in slowly, etc) have a 2X3 piston head on the front and set wiring on it, then start it up and start diging!
this would achually be pretty usful for servers, imagine you could set up auto-miners with alocators and chests on them hooked too the engine with stacks of coal being fed in, you could just sit AFK for a while then head in with minecart tracks and lay them down across the entire map, you could do this till you have reached the other side of minecraft!
Your 'Autocollect Box' sounds just like the Allocator in the Allocator mod. Search it in the Released mods section, you should find it there. :tongue.gif:

Water works well :wink.gif:
also if anything, spikes would become a block you could add to a piston to make deadly
