So I was looking at a thread about minecarts when I suddenly thought, Hey, why not have hand cars? there pretty old, and I think they fit pretty well.
So I decided to make this suggestion. But like any good MCFer, I did my homework and found that it had been done before. I took some of its ideas and added my own. Here it is.
Hand carts
(also kind of a minecart over haul.)
Essentially a mine cart with a hand pump thing. Not really sure how to describe it.
If you don't know what they look like, Google 'Hand car'
You would simply craft it, place on the track, right click, and to pump, alternate up and down arrow keys. The alternation needs to be steady. You can slow down the speed of alteration for varying speeds. Max speed would be maybe one or two bps faster than a minecart at top speed. (bps meaning blocks per second.) That would be no easy task for your fingers though, and would get tiring very quickly. If you need to stop fast, all you need to do is left click, engaging the brake. To switch directions, slow down, (By either pumping backwards or use the brake) and press R to switch sides on the cart.
Here is a recipe I came up with.
If you have a better idea then let me know.
What I see this being useful for, is a half way point between gravity powered tracks, and redstone powered tracks. I also think minecarts should be able to couple. simply by bumping together. To separate them, just left click. this way, you could pull a train of people in SMP or a freight train in SSP. Or both. The extra weight will make you have to work harder though.
Hand carts will be usable by two people at once. I know this could get complicated, but one person just has to go first, then the next follows. In SMP, You could also connect multiple Hand cars together for more power.
Thats it. Tell me what to change, and with enough support from others, I'll change the OP.
Especially if this is unbalanced.
Thanks for reading.
(Sorry for the blocks of text. Minecraft forum won't keep the spacing.)
How will the game distinguish you from changing directions? In real life, the owner needs to push it first, to decide the direction, and the hand crank does the rest.
There should be some way to automatically switch directions. Maybe have it so that you need to press a button, and it will start going the other way. (make it so that left click breaking is slower than reversing the direction mid driving).

I guess. Although I think the game should only interpret up then down for forward, then, down then up for backwards.

But what happens if the person screws up, and accidentally does it the other way, because of how fast they were going. All it takes is them to double press one of the arrows, and they are going in the opposite direction.

Well, your character doesn't turn around. Thats a problem.
What key should I use to look the opposite direction?

R?
That seems like a good idea. As for the character turning around, it could just be as simple as how the character turns when in a minecraft, but until he actually starts to change direction, then he looks the other way.

Maybe next time you could use the search instead of telling other people to use the search.

Hmm, maybe next time you should read the entire OP.
And the topic sub title.

I'll edit that in.
