So, after playing some good old SMP, i come back on hours later to see obvious holes, where someone dug straight to all my chests and the like. Slightly agitated, i began to thing about ways to prevent them. The method that the server im in, uses a special trap chests that are placed all around the map that records who opens them to catch x rayers...
But that's not very effective, obviously. Somehow i find myself thinking about games like Quake 3 ( coincidental that Notch posts about it! ) And i remembered there was a pure server feature!
For those of you who don't know, what a Pure server is, is that it forces clients to use the same info as the host. So, basically this could, say, enforce everyone to use the default texture pack! Thus crushing out texture exploits like x-rays.
To round things up, i'm suggesting that Notch add a Pure Server option that's customisable a bit. So you can set the Server's texture options ( IE will everyone use Norsecraft, maybe JohnSmith's texture pack? Perhaps good old default)
TL;DR Add pure servers as an anti x-ray exploit feature.
Rendering happens entirely on the client side. There is no (practical) way for the server to find out what texture pack a client is using without taking the client's word for it, and then you'd have the same problem.
It's not the texture pack you need to worry about, it's modded clients. Just changing your texture pack won't let you see past the second layer. Also, I think people would be annoyed not to use their preferred texture pack.
