I think that when you have an object that emits light (like a torch) in your hand, it should emit light as if it were placed, but only at 80% brightness (or 2 light levels).
Also, I have the Battle Towers mod, and all those diamond tools are hard to pass on (I have enough of them), so I think you should be able to smelt down tools of iron or better to get back one (iron/gold ingot, diamond) for other use. It's not overpowered because you don't get full return on any tools except for shovels.
Oh, one more little thought. Diamonds are strong. Make diamond block's explosion resistance 250 (half that of water and lava 'blocks').

Every one of these ideas is something I figured was just common herpaderp that should've been integrated into the game since early Alpha. I haven't been following the suggestions forum but I'm sure these ideas, save resistance, have been suggested before. It's a no brainer. People used to talk alot about lanterns, but why can't you just use your torches? I'm sure Notch doesn't want to make it so a single torch will be your best friend forever, but you can place and replace anyway and nurfing the brightness when held in hand would balance this anyway to an extent. This may just be in the adventure upate. I only speculate this because it looks like one of Mojang's advetising pictures shows a character holding a torch in front of a cave that's emmitting light. It doesn't say much at all I'm just hoping.
Smelting has been a good idea as well. Once again adding a small return penalty so you can't just use and reuse everything you have. Te penalty should vary based on item condition as well, so you can't use a diamond pick until it's nearly broken and then immediatly smelt it down to save a diamond or two. If it's practically broken then forget it.
I watched a series of vieos awhile ago that featured a guy dropping TNT blocks on platforms of all the different blocks in mMinecraft, and I was a little surprised and disapointed by the explosive resistance of alot of blocks. If there was any difference between most of them, it was unnoticable to me. Dirt and sand seemed to have the same resistance. Well that doesn't seem right. Dirt should be a little more resistant. Stone and solid iron blocks seemed to have the same resistance. Really?
There's still much that can and should be done to Minecraft to make it a better rounded game before Notch begins talking about a full release (which he is of course already). Don't get me wrong. I love the guy, but I feel like there's some very small yet very important tweaks that he's not acknowledging need to be made.
The walking with torches has been tested and would crash the game, because java sucks
Didn't know it was already tested but I'm sure you're right. There's probably some work-arounds like allocating more memory to Java and/or using opti-mods. Notch isn't going to release a feature that requires players to mo the game however, understandably so. Something should really be done to make it manageable.
Thank you for taking your time to respond to my suggestions. If you look at this page, it will list all the resistances. A lot of them are fairly similar, with the main groups of 30, 15, 2.5, and 0
Also, I have thought about the fact that tools can be used down to their last few uses and then smelted. Maybe it only applies to un-used tools. i.e. you can ONLY smelt un-used tools. That kind of makes sense, because you build a tool to use it, you will use it. If you find a tool, and don't need it, currently, there is no point in grabbing it. This suggestion gives a reason to pick out iron+ tools from reward chests and such.

I recommend looking at the Adventure mod. They did it. Why can't notch?
