Have you ever tried to get a music disc via creepers, and just when you find a skeleton, the creeper vanishes? Or rushed back home to get shears for shearing that brown sheep, only to find no mobs around? The branding iron is the solution. The brand is crafted like so:
and has about 30 uses. Use it on a cow, wolf, zombie, creeper, it doesn't matter! it keeps them around, till death do you part (their death, not yours).
The uses? Many. Keeping a wolf around until you can fetch some bones. Having your own version of a dungeon, except with creepers (if you dare)! On a parting note, yes, I did use the search bar, and the first 10 pages were all mods or other uses of the term.
how exactly would you tame a creeper? It will explode before you can get near it.
Also, that's not a very good way of searching. Although some people do think of using a branding iron, most people think of using a collar of some sort. Either way, it's still the same idea, and the same concept, just a different name.

I am the bone of my sword
Steel is my body, and fire is my blood
I have created over a thousand blades
Unknown to death, Nor known to life
Have withstood pain to create many weapons
Yet, those hands will never hold anything
So as I pray, Unlimited Blade Works
what do you mean "parting note?" On Topic; this would be cool, but honestly i doubt it will ever get into vanilla minecraft. just an idea, maybe instead of it always being hot you might have to put the tip into a fire or lava to heat it up, and it will only temporarily stay hot. that would probably be pretty hard to code though.

It shouldn't be hard to code. There could be a global variable which gets it's value increased every time a fire or lava block is hit by the branding iron. The value could then go down either every time it's used, or every time a tick or a certain number of ticks goes by.
It seems to me that the work required to get this branding-persistence to work would actually be more than simply making all mobs persistent, which to me is the more desirable goal.
I like this idea better then the "collar" idea's firstly because putting a collar on something that wants to kill you isnt going to make it stop wanting that.
but mostly because this doesnt make it not want to kill you. this just makes it not go away.
which could be VERY useful for making Zoos or farms.
