Just think, Instead of having to go onto a specified world in minecraft to play with friends, you could ust have them link with your computer. It would be a lot like xbox live, It would alert you when friends were online (can be toggled), what they were doing on minecraft, ect. Then, if they so much wanted to play with you, you could connect via internet, transforming any solo server into a multiplayer server. It would still keep server companies in buisness of course. And if you give your friend permission to, they can edit your solo player world while you are away, thus creating a world just for 2 people.
Lets face it, people aren't going to want to buy a server or host one on their own computer, its money consuming, ect.
So why not let this happen? Easy linking of maps, ect.
On aanother note, what if your stats could be transfered from computer to computer? I, personally am tired of having to get acheivements all over again when switching computers, or carrying around a flashdrive with my statistics & maps. So, what if your minecraft maps and stats were saved to your account and could be accesed at any time, from any computer.
This is all just speaking in "IF"s, but this could totally be a reality.
Possibly already suggested (if not, I can't see why because it's so awesome of an idea that someone must have thought of it), but either way I would love to see something like this implemented into Minecraft.

Yeah, i dont feel like that goes very in depth though... This could be expanded, here.
... Are you kidding? I don't think we're talking about the same thread... His thread goes WAY farther into detail than yours... It has pictures, diagrams, and all around good explanation.
Notch plans on making stats storage on their servers.
The whole idea of allowing a single player world go multiplayer requires either you or your friend to become a host and a man in the middle would be required to allow you to play with your friend. That costs money to run along with all the other people using it.
A lot of ideas cost money. Players aren't willing to pay a monthly or yearly fee to do it. Xbox Live costs money.
