Barrels and Food
Firstly this is not my idea, this was originally Thoreln's suggestion, I am only improving upon it in a full idea.
How can food get more realistic?
I'm not gonna come out of nowhere with another food, I'm going to make food more realistic by adding a freshness indicator. I don't think you can eat pork you cooked a Minecraft month ago, therefore, once food has been in your inventory for X amount of days it restores nothing and wastes space.
Food is more than something you cook, it's something you enjoy, especially while its fresh, I, would never want to eat raw pork that's 9 days old, I'll lose my ****ing stomach because it'll have some parasite infection and I'll need an operation. and this teaches kids that play Minecraft that you need to have fresh food to live.
What does it offer?
A better challenge to those who play Minecraft, finding food to keep your health well, not to have it for emergencies all the freaking time. That also means that you're gonna need to hunt more if your reservoirs go bad.
The solutions to the problem Solution 1:
Having sotrage is nice, but each type of storage container has purposes.
Chests are multipurpose, but that doesn't mean their effective, Crates (A suggestion I've browsed with the NEW SEARCH BAR!) are for moving industrial supplies so they don't preserve well.
However the barrel, is made for perishibles, such as beer, hops, wheat, even meat.
Barrels can be crafted like so:
As you can see, for maximum food preservation, you need to dig and give one measly bar of iron ingot to craft it, but how many can you possibly get, after all, putting barrels together won't give you one bigass barrel! So, Stick with chests but don't DIE HARD using chests to preserve your precious food.
Solution 2:
You must be thinking... "0MGZZZZ U BAST4RD T4TS S0OOOOO M34N 0F U"
Well i made this next solution to satisfy your usual thought for "laziness", and also to make meat last even longer, since usually raw meat expires within a day if not preserved or cooked once slaughtered.
Salt is found near the shores in large clumps, hopefully you can use a humble wooden pickaxe to mine this element for 1-4 salt... every time you apply salt to meat (especially Raw) you extend it's perishable life by a fair amount longer!
I don't want to make a new element, but this is another solution!
Prologue
This, was not originally mine this was an extended version of Thoreln's suggestion.
Commentary and support is obliged, and as usual trolls are not...
TL;DR?
Make food expire, and make a barrel to preserve it or use salt to preserve your precious meats.
Search , even i made the suggestion for freshness of food... and i even made it 10 times more detailed.... with tons of paragraps explaining carefully everything...
Also , as i said before i even made that suggestion.. and not even i think that it will be added to the game... it is just to complex for minecraft...
99.9 % of the suggestions dont get even considered by notch
0.01 % of the suggestions get considered by notch but never added

Try with a modder.
1)I never said it wasn't yours or anyone else's idea, I've decided to add onto Thoreln's suggestion not STEAL FROM people that made threads like these 6 months ago,
2) you never said anything before, it can be, and how is it to complex?! Notch has considered expanding oceans, don't YOU THINK that's too complex for minecraft?
I find this to be better as mod, rather than an part of vanilla minecraft. It certainly would be more popular and could be integrated in mod form rather than idea for because the coding is more or less already complete. I would also like to point out that the reason beer is put in barrels is so that it can ferment and become alcoholic, not to stop it from expiring. Also just storing things in barrels does f*ck all when it comes to stopping them from rotting. Thats why you should be able to add water to the barrels (that alone does **** all as well mind you) and then add either hops (a new crop similar to wheat) for alcohol and salt to make brine. With brine you can pickle your raw and cooked pork and cooked eggs to make pickled pork and eggs which last thrice as long their corked variants. You could still apply salt to raw pork then you get...
BACON! Raw bacon restores 3 hearts and lasts twice as long as raw pork and cooked bacon restores 7 hearts (because bacon is just that awesome) and lasts thrice as long cooked pork. cake and bread can't expire but they can become moldy if left in dark place to long such as a chest (mold grows best in dark and moist places)and act the same as rotten meat and eggs. Rotten foods become inedible but can act bonemeal, helping crops grow. I home this helped you if you turn this into a mod

Great you made a suggestion, now stop participating in my topic and make your own.

That was needlessly rude, may i inquire why you happen to acting like a complete and total ***** (This is a question, i am not trying to be a ***** in this regard as some might presume). All i did was suggest a variant of your idea for general discussion, improvement upon, and the further discussion upon any further variations, if any.

Perhaps you could place a barrel ontop of an existing one so it would create a large barrel (instead of on the side like chests)

3) I don't need statistics I prefer support
4) I'd love to, where can I find one?
