The durabilty bar for the Tools is helpful but what about Improving it!
Tools that you use would slowly show small cracks on them when the durabilty goes down!
But of course the Normal Durability bar would still be there...
Now some may ask "Wut?"
Here is what I mean:
-You create a Pickaxe(Or any other tool) and you are ready to go into action!
Later:
-You used your Pickaxe to collect some Coal and it is in pretty good shape(No cracks on the sword)
Later:
-You decide to go mining as you are in need of some Iron...So you take your trusty pickaxe and go on an Iron Spree!
You then see the Durability is at the Yellow Bar and see some Small Cracks on the Pickaxe(Small Cracks come when the tools durability goes into the yellow durability stage)
Later:
-Its the night and you are bored so you go back into the Cave and then start to find a dungeon or something...
You then see The Durability of your Pickaxe is at the Red Durability Stage and you see more cracks on it.(Once the Tool goes to the Red Stage it will show more cracks on it indicating the tool is in a bad shape)
Later:(Last Time :biggrin.gif:)
-You see that the Pickaxe is in a bad shape so you go and use it up at mining...Then you see it is almost broken but you see even more cracks..You also see that it is mining slower...(When the Tool has 5% left of its durability it shows some More Cracks and its falling apart a bit...Also Because of that the Damage for the sword is decreased and for the other tools mining and chopping is slower)
The only tool that doesn't have a Slow down when it is at 5% is the Hoe...The Hoe will like the other tools show cracks but will not slow down...
Also some might ask "Why would the Tool slow down when the tool is almost broken"!
The answer is simple...The tool is almost broken and can barely work!
Lets take it to real Life....
If you had a sword and you use it to kill stuff while it is sharp..After using it..It wills slowly become blunt and not sharp and will do less damage!
So that is why...
This would be good for 32x textures and higher because the vanilla minecraft pixel space is pretty small.. I like the cracks idea though it just isn't fit for minecraft vanilla.

"Cracks do not fit Minecraft Vanilla"...
Maybe but while mining and stuff you do see cracks :biggrin.gif:
But when you stop hitting them the cracks go away then :sad.gif:
I think it would be cool for a mod, but vanilla doesn't have enough pixels to do it well. I'd rather the iron tool crack as well though, since beating a piece of iron against something would cause it to break like anything else eventually.

Ok Then...I also thought that Iron should of cracked like the other tools but Iron mostly rusts instead of Cracking but it would be more simple...Editing!
The thing is, blocks have a whole 16x16 area to do a cracks animation, while most items have about a 3 pixel thick area. For example, a sword is only 3 pixels thick. You can't really make some nice looking cracks, other than just black dots on the sword.

I am the bone of my sword
Steel is my body, and fire is my blood
I have created over a thousand blades
Unknown to death, Nor known to life
Have withstood pain to create many weapons
Yet, those hands will never hold anything
So as I pray, Unlimited Blade Works

The iron has to react to oxygen to rust. It has little to do with using an item. That's all I have against the iron quality items rusting.
Right now I am seeing people do not like cracks as it is impossible almost with the Pixels and stuff...
All in all I just wanted to suggest something like a visibilty thing to see that the durability on your tool is going down....Like If you have a knife in real life and use it and stuff it will slowly stop being sharp..Evantually when used to much and all it just might break or something...
But Instead of cracks there could probably be some pieces falling apart or maybe when the durability goes to the red stage it might then just start to become a bit red like it is hurt or dying :biggrin.gif:

Last one went well, grow this one too!! HAHAHAHA!!!
Then Explain how the other cracks come when you mine or dig blocks :wink.gif:
But just to say it the cracks would not be realistic...
They are of course pixelised...
If you go on Paint and make a line and then Zoom in all the way you can see small blocks that create the line...
The cracks would be made that way...
Here is an excample by drawing it:
Sorry If the Image Is small but If you look closely to the sword you will see small black cracks....
But all in all creating the cracks would not be very hard...Its almost just like drawing the sword on Paint :biggrin.gif:
