This may have already been suggested, but I'll make a shot. When playing games I usually try to look at the simple things that can and should be improved upon.
In this case, how about actually adding a button that you can press to collect items in your radius, rather than have them be collected automatically? In the options page, you should obviuosly then be able to also choose whether you want auto-collect turned on or off (as to not change things for those who prefer that).
REASON:
The auto-collect isn't a huge issue, but neither should it be a hard thing to improve either. The main reason is the Cobblestone, Dirt and other stuff that drops all the time. The inventory gets clogged up pretty fast when going through the mother of all caves or you're trying to flatten the surface for farming, castle crafting and whatnot. This function prevents that from happening.
I just think it should be resolved, cause I think we can all agree that the inventory clogs up pretty fast at time. And when it does, you just have to throw away a bunch of stuff, prefereably into lava or down a cliff so that you don't accidentally get it collected back into your inventory.
What about a button that toggles auto collect on and off? It would have to have some kinda onscreen thing, maybe a light that either goes on or off, so you don't wander around mining for a bit having completely forgotten that you aren't picking anything up.
As long as the option to toggle auto-collect on and off is there, it's fine by me. I'm just assuming that the devs are able to see the obvious, so I don't go into design details. But user-friendly is indeed the way to go, and a hotkey to toggle it on/off is definitely the best approach. A red lamp or a treasure chest icon or whatever could show up in the GUI when you're in "auto-collect mode". :wink.gif:
