I'm sure anyone who follows notch around on the internet knows he's a pretty big fan on roguelikes. He has said that he wants to incorporate some sort of roguelike aspects.
For those who don't know, it's basicly a typical dungeon exploring game, somewhat like an RPG where you explore dungeons and find items on the way, and whatever else.
it is a very lovely concept, and a very enjoyable genre, but in many cases it doesn't work well for minecraft. One of the things of the roguelike genre that is fun is starting with little or nothing and getting things as you go through. Things like this work in Adventure maps if it's made in a certain way, but in minecraft the game can't be centered around the dungeons, and so the players may enter the dungeons with any variation of items, and it isn't very hard or uncommon to get a diamond sword, and so even if there was a weapon that was better than the diamond sword, it wouldn't be the same just to have one upgrade. And adding a large amount of upgrades far better than the diamond sword would be silly.
On my suggestion, the best way to add a certain reward as far as armor or weapons go, is to incorporate my "Dungeon Armor idea) at some variation)
I'm not going to try to be like a philosipher when I say this, but dungeons don't drop deserving loot. Now, I know in the adventure update that will change, as well as dungeons in whole, but this could still fit. What I'm proposing is that said dungeon always drop one of the four items of "Bone Armor"
Now, when I say bone armor, I'm not going to point out "ITS LIKE IRON ONLY STRONGER" or something. Achieving armor is somewhat pointless because it'll break relatively fast, even if it's diamond or iron. However, there's something special about achieving bone armor. Besides it being almost identical to iron in durability, it regenerates. It isn't indestructible, but every minecraft day it regenerates 15% of it's durability. This armor cannot be crafted, because then that would remove the point of it dropping in a dungeon. Achieving an entire Bone armor set would be like making a mansion out of pumpkins. We could also toy with the idea of similar weapons dropping, but I will save that for later.
It can however enjoy the aspects of roguelikes, like an ambush room, where as you enter the doors infront of you and behind you lock, and you have to face mobs to get through. I would also propose a random "levels" of a dungeon, one being a "maze level" where you need to go through the maze, encounter mobs as they spawn from darkness, and lift every lever in the room to progress to the next level. The next one would be a more of a "puzzel" level, and would random incorporate jumping puzzels, a water puzzel (Similar to a popular "press levers to change where the minecarts goes to open the door" used in adventure maps, but only with water, and if you make a mistake, you need to flush out all the water and start over) and other things.
The other level would be the monster level, with any variation of battling mobs. Simple, but Im sure a lot of people would enjoy this.
Also, to prevent people from just "break blocks to get through" use a very well placed Aether feature, the blocks of the dungeon are unbreakable until you finish it.
This is very much like the Aether dungeon system. In the chests you find loot that is not able to be crafted. Maybe there could also be capes. Useless, but a bragging right. But, a perk of wearing one could be 1.5 jump height or running 1.5 times normal speed. Nothing major, but might be useful.
Oh, and a question. What happens if you break the armor? Does it just disappear, or crumble into some dust, to be regenerated tomorrow?

You can't make metre cubed pieces of rock get jiggy with each other, that's just WRONG.
Go back into the OP and edit the spoiler tags. They should be {spoiler} and {/spoiler}, but with the proper brackets. Why don't we have a spoiler button anyways? Other than that, I love it.
