Since sandstone is pretty much the sandy counterpart to cobblestone, I was wondering recently why there are Cobblestone tools and not Sandstone ones. Therefore, I give you my sandstone tool idea:
To make a tool out of sandstone, you simply make it as usual, but with sandstone instead of cobblestone/iron/etc. Its durability is slightly lower than Stone, but this makes it worth crafting: Any Sandstone tool that is broken disintegrates into one Stick and 1-3 pieces of Sand (Depending on how many it took to craft the tool). I feel this would help if you spawned on a beach or in the desert, especially for newbies, because you can make the tool, use it to collect cobblestone and carve out a base, and then it disintegrates and you have sand for windows and you need one less Stick to make a real tool.

If you are in a desert, how did you get the wood? Stone is easy enough to get. The problem is the wood. Therefore, this idea is useless. Also, it has been stated that there are to be no more tools, just ways to improve the current ones.
Namelessjake: This is Minecraft. If you can break down trees with your fists and fight exploding, armless green monsters, you should most certainly be able to make a shovel out of compacted sand.
TheEvilM: Perhaps make sandstone collectable by hand, then? After all, compacted sand would most likely be slightly easier to break than solid stone. and I wasn't necessarily suggesting that this be implemented into the game, it just seemed like a good idea.

Why have sandstone collectible by hand? Even then, you would still need to find at least one tree.
