I've been looking through the Wikipedia article on the truffles after all of the sudden thinking back to episodes of childhood cartoons involving the truffle and the swine, so I looked up what it all meant.
Quote from Wikipedia (Edited for simplicity) »
A truffle is the fruiting body of an underground mushroom; spore dispersal is accomplished through fungivores, animals that eat fungi. Almost all truffles are ectomycorrhizal and are therefore usually found in close association with trees.
Long story short, these are the mushrooms we find in the game. What do truffles have to do with the pigs mentioned in the title? Read on in the article. What? You're too lazy to? Of for the love of...
Quote from Wikiepedia »
Looking for truffles in open ground is almost always carried out with specially trained pigs (truffle hogs) or, more recently, dogs. The Lagotto Romagnolo is currently the only breed recognized for sniffing out truffles (although virtually any breed could be trained for this use).
Note how truffle hogs are used to search out these things by nature? Why can't the pig find these mushrooms for us? Of course, if all pigs go towards the nearest mushroom, there'd be none left for your precious mushroom stews. The slight altering in the vanilla code for pigs to normally move towards the closest truffle more often, but not quite find it. If there is one (a mushroom or truffle) in the chunk, then more pigs would be gathering around it, but not necessarily eating it. It's more of a way to attract pigs from the wild to your dinner plate in your cheesy built-for-function dirt/wooden house.
If you read this word wall with explanation on a "hidden" feature of pigs and their spawning code, then go ahead and send your answer in the poll above. Should there be a flaw with it, feel free punch the "No, this is not a good idea." option and show me where I went wrong.

All these pony-based signatures aren't going to win these people any respect.
Side note: The purpose of this idea isn't to make things easier, but instead, more strategic and realistic. Regardless, pigs will still be very scarce when you need them and plentiful and plump when you don't. Emphasis on "strategic."

I like it. It would be a good herding tool for 1.8.

WOOT! MORE SHOOTY STUFF!
If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 90% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 10% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens. (Griefing is an art. And a lot of dead creepers.)
Note #2: I've ran a search on truffle-based suggestions. Those ideas appear to show truffles as a whole new item. Research shows that they grow as the mushrooms seen and near trees, which today's version's mushrooms do. Just stating this before someone points out another thread about truffles, pig-taming, etc.
Heck, this idea also states a difference in pigs' spawning formations. Would be difficult to code, but can be of use.
In fact, yes. But in my opinion, only the brown one should work as the "truffle," as it resembles one more than the red one, which I will call the toadstool. Truffle and Toadstool. Looks like those mushrooms have official names now. But the main purpose of this suggestion is to change the way pigs spawn into a more natural cause for searching for brown mushrooms/truffles.
