With the 1.8 update coming with the option to change the maps height, I ran the possibilities through my head of what can be done to make use of this coming addition. Seeing Notch's picture he posted on Twitter that saw a massive mountain far higher than ones we've come to know in Minecraft, I decided that a few things could be done with them.
First of all, any block that is above layer 120 (Normal height barrier) will become a mountainous biome. No matter what biome the bottom layer (Under 120) is at, it will snow of on top. If the map generation code is right, mountains can become huge in both width and height, therefor making exploring these ranges fun but dangerous.
Now, with the basics of the mountains put into play, I think once you pass the 120 layer, some form of energy bar (Like the one seen in the Survivalism mod) should show up. Meaning that if you don't eat, drink an sleep, you're subject to dying if you're underprepared. Staying out in the cold at night with no form of heat (torches, open flame) could cause damage, but I'm not sure if that can be implemented.
Now, with all these new features, there's got to be a reward for risking your ass up there, and thats why I wan't dungeons like the Aether's Gold Dungeons to be implemented randomly at high altitude, but instead of a Sun God that you fight, it would be a Yeti, or something mountain themed.
So, in conclusion, is this stupid? Awesome? Nerdgasmic? You decide below.
I like the idea of survivalism in minecraft but it should just be left as an option perhaps in Normal or Hard? As for aether dungeons that'd be neat since people could just leave it alone or fight them. In my opinion a lot of options is what makes minecraft fun.

Go check out some of my suggestions on my profile, in the about me tab!

Maybe since it is a higher elevation? I think that's how it works...
no on the being cold and stuff.. I believe that the hunger bar that will be present in 1.8 is enough, at least for the official game - a mod of it would be cool. As for the snow on blocks above 120.. YES
As for dungeons in the mountain.. sure, but i would like to see how notch does the dungeons/ruins/strongholds in 1.8.

If you went days without eating drinking and sleeping would you be able to survive on a mountain?

Yes! That would be awesome! I was thinking about that before, but I didn't bother to make topic. Ahh, imagine the views and the panorama's from and of those mountains! Breathtaking!
Nice work! And maybe there can be some sort of EPIC treasure you can obtain, Like the yeti's coat, it lets you survive in the harsh environments of the mountains, and it stuns mobs when you do a critical hit. Piggles says yes to better mountains!

Not really.
You can sit in the tundra/alpine/snowey biomes and not die for Minecraft days/months/years WITHOUT food or heat.
