Minecraft has its own time, so calendars would be very useful. You'd craft one out of 6 paper, and 3 sticks,

It would be placed like a painting, but when right clicked, tells you the exact amount of years that have passed, and has months and days listed. This way you could tell exactly how many days it took you to build that massive castle, or how long your wolf lived. Or even plan out minecraft parties, and "New year parties" or something.
Either it should start counting from the time it was made as Year 1, or from the time the server/map was made.
Can't you check how much time you have played in a particular world from the stats page?

Calendars is not needed at this point. They wouldn't be all that useful as they would only say how many days have passed since you either created the world or crafted the calendar.
If minecraft adds seasons or something then a calendar would be nice, but until then we don't really need one.
Besides, minecraft propably don't even have months (since the length of days and nights are the same every day), so the calendar would only count days.
But as I said, if minecraft had seasons then the calendar would be useful as you could then plan ahead so that you start your mining project during the winter when the days are short and do your open world exploring during the summer when the nights are short.

ThiS has been suggested before and I actually did some images for a thread once. I really don't see the use of them, if you want to see how long
it took to build your awesome castle you can use real time.
