NOTE: This is related to the ACTUAL terrain of the game, not terrain.png for texture packs. :dry.gif:
Here are some ideas I've had for ways the Minecraft terrain could be made less boring. I've included in-game mockups of what they could possibly look like.
- Flooded Tunnels
Think of Terraria's flooded caves. They're pretty much just there to be an obstacle, and of course to look cool. Now, I was thinking, there could be moss and vines that grow near the water, along with some kind of fish mob in the water (Possibly neutral, who knows). Then, there could be some kind of reward at the end. Like a dungeon chest, or some kind of ore block or something.
- Marshes
Different from swamps, these wetland areas have a lot of vegetation, soulsand (Or a new mud block) along the edges of the water, and possibly new flowers.
- Mountain Lakes
*mockup coming soon*
Basically what this is, is a lake high above sea level. Much higher than other small ponds. Of course, you'd need actual mountains (Bigger than the "mountains" currently in the game) for this to work.
- Dense Forests
Now, I'm picturing them with taller trees, but this image will have to do for now. Dense forests would block out most sunlight, making it dangerous to be in during day AND night (As mobs could spawn in them). Maybe there could be a possibly for cabins, or destroyed cabins to appear in the forests, to give it more of an outdoors-y feel.
Well, that's all I have so far, stay tuned for more ideas!
Also, I believe Notch is considering making the map height higher in the future.
Thanks!
And yeah, I saw that. I think he said it'll support up to 512 in height, but 128 will still stay the default. Either way, it's pretty nice.
Right after posting this, I got some more ideas, which I'll expand upon later:
- Crystal Caverns
- Crags
- Natural Wheat Fields (That the player can break, but not harvest anything from)
- Bogs (Sort of like the marshes, but with grassy plants in/above the water)
IS this meant to be put for download at some point? If so, it should be in the "Texture Packs" section of the forum. If you are suggesting it to be the default textures of minecraft I support because these give it a lot less of a well blocky feeling?
Did you even read the topic? *sigh*

EDIT: Seems as though crystal caves are planned! http://getsatisfaction.com/mojang/topics/rainbow_crystalline_caves_and_how
