Lighting is one of the fundamentals in Minecraft. It controls mob spawning. So here are a few ideas I've thought about that would make it's importance more apparent/controllable.
Spawning/despawning animation: How do mobs get created? Currently, mobs flash in and out of existence. I think for hostile mobs they should quickly grow from the ground and have a black overlay that fades in sync. This will stress the fact that they come from the shadows. Despawning would be the same effect in reverse.
Monster pellets: A throw-able item that, along with a small shock wave and some smoke, will force a monster attempt to spawn. Allows the player to check if their base is safe, and paired with a dispenser to make a deadly trap. possibly a reward for the destruction of mob spawners.
Directional light: Yes, I am aware this has been posted before. (that is why there is more to this topic, and no other topic has explained it in this way) I place thousands of torches, and I am constantly thinking "That looks dark...why isn't there a better way?". I want a directional light that emits light in a straight line. ("Why?") It would have the same heat-map as a torch, allowing safe, snowy areas and illuminated ice. It would not illuminate anywhere but directly in front of it, allowing a fully lit block next to a block not lit at all. So you could make a glass box where hostile mobs could spawn inside but not outside of it.
If anyone would like to make mods for these as a demonstration, it would be appreciated. However this is not a mod request I would like these to be officially added to Minecraft.
Also: I might post more later

It’s the unpleasantness of the system that keeps me out.
I’d rather be in, in a good system. That’s where my discontent comes from:
being forced to choose to stay outside.
My advice: Just keep movin’ straight ahead.
Every now and then you find yourself in a different place."

I have NEVER seen a mob spawn or despawn without being in a dungeon. Why you may ask? It is because monsters spawn no closer than 24 (correct me if I'm wrong) blocks away from you.
Adding an animation would just stress your computer.
Monster pellets: A throw-able item that, along with a small shock wave and some smoke, will force a monster attempt to spawn. Allows the player to check if their base is safe, and paired with a dispenser to make a deadly trap. possibly a reward for the destruction of mob spawners.
Maybe, I don't think it would work well. Why would you WANT monsters to spawn?

I want it, it sounds like a decent idea, however I will not go into further detail because it has been posted before as you stated already.

I have seen mobs spawn/despawn countless times. You can see more than 24 blocks away, so if you stare out at night you can see spawning. And sometimes mobs randomly despawn. As for why you would want to make monsters spawn, I've said that. The pellet will only make the game TRY to spawn where it hits. In other words, if you throw it in a high light level area it would spawn nothing. Also i'm sure notch could implement ways to make the animation not stress minecraft too much (only occur if it is visible to the player, <75% used memory, on "fancy" graphics, occurs client side ect. ect.). your red text scares me... All seem pretty awesome. I would even be happy with the usual smoke puff for spawning monsters. Perhaps a piece of checking code to only make monsters that are visible to you puff and the rest don't to stop computer stress?
I think it would be cool that skeletons and zombies would pull themselves out of the ground when they spawn.
but
they don't have elbows.....

Just make it the same animation that the Smart Move mod uses for climbing up blocks. Steve doesn't have any elbows, but it still looks nice.
