Sometimes the moon waxes and wanes. But in Minecraft, it never does. It's a simple change in pixels bound by the timeless logic of days gone by, and I believe that the moon shall both wax and wane in the future.
I believe that Minecraft should have a moon more similar to our own, in that it changes in size; waxes and wanes. On the first night, the moon shall be in the "waning gibbous" phase, considering the fact that a full moon foretells absolute doom.
Oh, right. I suggest that in Minecraft, when the moon becomes full, the sky turns a dark red, and mobs begin to fight each-other in an all-out bloodbath (excluding villagers and Farlanders). Not to fret, the explosions of creepers will not destroy natural formations, considering that they'll be exploding a lot in this situation. As an extra bonus, night will last three times as long, and monsters will continuously spawn until the second quarter of the full-moon, in which mobs stop fighting among themselves and aim for you.
This is where Farlanders come in, in which they remove blocks from your base specifically for the purpose of their colleagues entering and striking (Farlanders' AI will need to be able to discern between man-made and natural blocks, the way the Aether Mod can tell the difference when chipping at rock with a sky-wood pick). Don't worry; They're terrorizing NPC villages as well.
Of course, the player will not be able to sleep during a full moon night. They'll have to fight it out 'till morning, a time that shall thwart these hostile mobs back into their own business. Imagine: Fighting along-side NPC village warriors against waves of relentless monsters. Perhaps if you defend a village from a full moon attack until morning, the villagers will reward you?
So, back to the actual moon phases. The Minecraft moon shall emulate the phases of our own. The larger the moon, the brighter it is at night, and the less mobs will spawn. It works the other way as well, in which a new moon will bring with it a very dark night and many dangerous creatures. It will take 27 Minecraft days for the moon to go from "waning gibbous" to full, giving the player just enough time to prepare for a full moon.
An update like this will give the player some goals, and encourage them to build a strong home in a certain amount of time before the full moon comes. This "Sacred Moon" update will apply to all difficulties, but full moons will not spawn monsters in Peaceful and Easy modes. It will also, in general, make Minecraft Survival more interesting.
I encourage you, the reader, to add suggestions to this idea.
Suggestions so-far: Mobs travel in groups, and instead of a free-for-all, beasts of their own species will team-up and fight other groups.
This is neat, reminds me of a suggestion I made long ago... few things though;
1) Please please please please please please PLEASE for the love of Notch call them Endermen, not Farlanders. They have nothing to do with the Far Lands, its already confirmed they're name won't change, the name is already rooted into the community, calling an Enderman by any other name is just confusing.
2) I think it would be cruel and unfair if for a portion of the night the mobs completely focus on attacking you. I like the idea of a 'free for all' were the mobs have increased A.I., and focus on not only killing each other, but also you. Maybe during this time, instead of having Endermen greif your house, give mobs the ability to climb ladders, activate redstone, increased eye-sight, and open doors. And while I'm on the idea, maybe during this time, each of the Mobs sorta gain different A.I.s and behaviors. Ya know, Zombies will form hordes and attempt to gang up on villages and other mobs, Skeletons will perch atop high cliffs and snipe enemies, Spiders just go F'n insane and just jump on anything moving, Creepers sneak up on an enemy mob, Endermen build walls of protection, Squids become Krakens and uberkillz everything etc.
Also, why not the New Moon instead of a Full Moon. I'd be scared of complete darkness rather then a full moon. I associate full moons with romance and werewolves, which I further associate with twilight. A completely dark sky with a dim red hue would be far more terrifying.

Hmm... The whole "full moon" thing is derived from the idea that mobs gain power from the moon itself, which is why they spawn at night.

Oh, I guess that make since, but I wouldn't think it would be that terrifying. Unless it was a pretty intense mixture of Crimson and black, and a Crimson/Black Full moon to go with it. It would give less of a creepy atmosphere and more of a 'Oh **** I gotta hurry and get out of here!' feel, which is also awesome.

Overall, this is a pretty neat idea. I like it.
This idea deserves to be in an update, considering the fact that the only thing that would be difficult to implement are the sudden changes in AI.
