Why does minecraft have such shallow oceans for? They are pretty much just big lakes...Really if seas and oceans in minecraft were deeper and larger, they would have a bit more respect. Also, why build an elegant bridge if one can just more quickly dig underneath it? I say make them down to bedrock+10 rock. Give them a massiveness of their own. Make a reason to make real bridges.
My opinion
edit: and just a slight thought...because this probably will not be implemented...I wonder if deleting maybe 20 chunks except for like 10 blocks on the bottom, and replacing their contents with water, then deleting the surrounding chunks completely, and forcing them to reformed would create a realistic ocean wall of sorts. Its a thought.
Your "heres why" is "pointless." I do not want to dig an unrealistic size hole in the ground just to make a bridge over it. That is "pointless." I can make bridges and tunnels, but would like to be forced to build a nice AND functional bridge.

If you want a functional bridge, you can work better with shallow water.
If you want a realistic bridge then you can stop being a lazy player and dig out a trench.
