Chisels, are tools used for carving or cutting materials such as steel, or wood.
Using a chisel would be quite simple. The crafting would go like this:
A rather simple recipe for a simple, yet useful tool. The point of a chisel would be to make a mark on stone, cobble, wooden and steel blocks. Why would we want to do this? To leave a trail while exploring caves, or maybe for marking a special spot. To make a mark, all you would need to do is right click on the appropriate block, and a small image would appear on that block. This small image could range from an arrow, to a pork chop, to a stick.
Chisels would have a duration of 120-180 uses, so you wouldn't run out of chisels too quickly. If anyone could provide me with a sprite, I would be very grateful.
Some of you may think that such a tool like this could be useless, or of not much importance, but I think that adding small things like this can add detail to Minecraft. I believe that this tool would make a bit of sense in the strange world of Minecraft.
I will try my best to keep this alive, to gain supporters because I do not want this to be forgotten, I want Notch to truly listen to this community's ideas.
Resurrecting this thread, as this is mostly the same as my suggestion.
Rather than just carve random symbols on the wall, you should have access to a somewhat full character map, with:
- Letters and numbers -- however, lowercase can be omitted
- Arrows, and at least a few icons, like happy/sad/creeper faces, and maybe icons for "home", "workshop", "farm", "danger", "surface"
- Maybe also a set of line pieces (like these: │─┌└├┬┴┼) for large drawings.
Then, you'd be able to use the chisel not just for crude orientation in your mine, but also for enormous signs and engravings.

Thanks. I might add in a poll to see if people would like me to message this idea to Notch. But only if enough people think it would be good.

Rather than having to come up with new crafting recipes, change the block type in place by using a chisel and choosing from a set of icons.
