Honestly, bones as fertilizer doesn't really make any sense for me, and I have an idea that might just improve growing food. So, here it is: Compost!
First, you'll need a compost bin:
Yes, you need logs to make it. Now, to get compost, you would need to eat some food, but only certain foods can be used for compost:
-Red Apples
-Pork
-Fish
-Chicken (when added)
-Steak (its on the wiki)
-Wood (logs)
After you eat any one of those foods, you get the "eaten" version of it. These cannot be eaten, but stack. The meats look like the bones with some leftover meat on them, while the apple is an apple core. To make compost, you place these in a slot in the compost bin. Only 3 slots are available. It acts like a fuel-less furnace, taking each pile and turning it into compost. The items are turned into compost relative to how many hearts they heal raw (in MC days). So, pork takes 2.5 days, even if it was cooked. Each food also makes a different number of compost.
-Apples makes 1
-Pork makes 2
-Fish makes 2
-Chicken makes 1
-Steak makes 3
-Logs make 5
Compost then acts like bone meal currently does (except not as a dye), but slower. Bone meal would retain its place as a dye, though it would be able to change wool back to white. (Possibly, farm blocks would need to be fertilized before they can grow anything, which is where compost comes in.)
WOOT! MORE SHOOTY STUFF!
If Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter were all destroyed, 90% of teens would go insane. If you're one of the 10% that would be laughing at them, copy this into your signature and hope it happens. (Griefing is an art. And a lot of dead creepers.)
It's okay I suppose. Is it only 'eaten' food that can be composted? 'Cause I'd think that raw food and wood of all sorts should be able to compost as well.
Oh yeah, I forgot that wood can be. But, wouldn't you want to keep raw foods so you can cook it?

In real life, bone meal is an excellent fertilizer, because it contains TONS of nutrients and minerals.
I find it very imbalanced that you can make something that gives you instant food without needing to put effort into it.
I feel that bones should stay the current and only way to speed up the growth process of crops.
Yeah, but thing of where you got those bones from. You just slayed some skeles, and now you lost some health. What are you going to spend it on? Each bone gives you one bread, which is only 1.5 hearts. It's not really overpowered.

You mean the Health Risks? That was in the 1990s and people still use the stuff these days.
