I've seen everything from furnaces to washing machines repairing our armor and tools in plugins and mods. The thing is, it's very inexpensive, meaning that it takes all the challenge of Minecrft away.
"So you think you can come up with something better?" Yes, yes I do.
Introducing the Mysterious Substance (not to be mistaken with the Portal Mod's Mysterious Substance). This new item in the game will be impossible to craft, hence it being mysterious, and you can get it as a rare drop from mobs or from dungeons. But only 1 in 10 dungeons would have it. This Mysterious Substance found from mobs, when smothered on your armor or tools will quickly soak into all the particles and regenerate it back, giving you a brand new piece of armor. Best part is, nothing happens to you! The only downside of this is the rareity!
To repair your armor, you put it into a crafting grid as small as a 2x2 (meaning you can do it on the run) and the result is an undamaged item in return. Say you were going dungeoneering or mining and your pickaxe was about to break. Instead of fearing that you'll have to downgrade to iron, you can just go kill some mobs and eventually one will drop the substance, and you can repair your pickaxe 100%!
Let's say it's maybe as rare as finding a still lava pool from the surface. You may say that this is common, but I get bored of my worlds fast, so I've made loads of new worlds and have only found maybe 4 still lava pools that I can easily see from the surface. If this is too rare, then please, feel free to give me what you think is fair.
If anyone wants to make this come true and make a mod for it, please feel free to and let me know when you get the finished version!
It would have been a good idea..However, if it's so rare. Woudn't it be easier to find the materials to make a brand new tool?
Well it doesn't have to be so rare. I did say you could suggest a rareity. Yes, it would be easier, but that's a waste of materials, I think. Instead of making a new one you can use the item that has that purpose.
even if it is so rare, youll use less diamonds because youll then have two routes to get new equipment, I vote more rare!
Yeah, that's the point. Giving someone two ways to repair their items gives you a reason to go kill mobs instead of hiding from them. And if you need to make a new one, go make a new one. I said it's rare for a reason. But it's worth it if you save 8 diamonds by repairing a chestplate...VERY worth it.
Seems like a good idea, I remember notch or someone in mojang teething about repairing armor and tools as a feature that's coming up, he might do it the mamma way with the same materials and a furnace or maybe this way. Good idea. Maybe also tiers of mysterious substance like one for iron, diamond and gold so ppl won't use it all on diamonds, all with different rarities?
i thought its kind of wierd when i red the title, but when i saw it its actually a really good idea. have least its not "DURP U KILL 1 ZOMBIE THEN A MAGICAL POWDER APIRS FROM IT AND YOU CRAFT A BETER PIKAXE."

Or maybe it could degrade within time? Say give it 10 minutes and it degrades to an iron level from a diamond level, ect? This would make it so it needs to be used fast...I don't like that but it's for balancing reasons.

Ghasts are hard to kill and also annoying. Plus, if they do drop anything, there is a large change it will just fall and burn.
This would make it dangerous to get ahold of, while also making it difficult to actually GET.
I think of it as looking like a black/very deep purple slimeball.
Two Words:
Mob Grinders
The Ghast idea is good though

Yeah, you read my mind with your description.
