How about a block that floats up? Not really a balloon just a block thats lighter than air. Maybe made from some yet unknown material from the sky dimension or cobwebs?
What if one floating block could lift up two other blocks. You could make an elevator that if you placed a block it would go down or removed one to go up. An elevator to a sky castle without all the mess needed now. You could have a stack of them & use a piston to release one at a time, for what I don't know. Or make a flying ship if we ever get fans.
I don't know I'm just thinking out loud. Let me know what you think.
They have something like that in the Aether mod, which you right click with a particular type of tool and the blocks float up. But for elevators... no clue.
Message me yours if you want to trade in Animal Crossing: New Leaf or just need some friends to play with. I can also do Pokemon trades in Pokemon X(or Y), but I don't have any good stuff, and the only good stuff I have is not for trade so...send me requests anyway.

I don't think think this would work. What happens when it hits the ceiling of Minecraft? I would rather see a bubble generator that sends bubbles into the air that pop when they hit something.
I was thinking pumice. That takes care of most of the problems too. It wouldnt float up all teh time, only when its in water. And you could possibly put several together with a space in the middle to make a block that is naturally 1 block in the air from the block underneath. Say you put a slab underneath it. It would float up 1/2 a block. So you could make a levitating staircase. Add in some redstone and tnt and youve got a collapsing staircase trap. Replace tnt with pistons and its a staircase that grows as you walk. Im not saying its a viable idea, just that that would be awesome.
I think this would have vital uses, like an elevator.
It could be crafted like this:
Red wool is redstone, pink wool is the antisand or whatever, and the stick would be a lever.
Placing it could be like a door. 1 block think and wide, and 2 blocks tall. The lever inside would be flipped to "activate" the antisand or normal sand, to float up or down. It would only be able to travel along vertical redstone torches. Like a rail of sorts. It would stop at the top. This would prevent outdoor usage that would allow you to fly into space, possibly even braking the game or the elevator which therefore kills you by falling.
If you don't understand: Open door, stand inside, close door. Flip lever, go up. Flip lever a gain, go down.
Setup for usage would be like this:
The stone slabs depict the elevator, and the torches are redstone torches.
If used right, these could be upward travel pistons. Of course. Or even be used as a piston that can extend upward and downward however far you like.

Haven't tried the Aether mod yet. I don't mod SSP much. Might have to check it out & see what I can build with this "gravitite". Thanks.

There's a certain challenge to everything. Not everything HAS to be easy. If you think collecting it isn't worth the risk, don't try.
