I thought I would start a thread on this. I could not find one via search.
Notch mentioned in a tweet, that he was having problems coming up with a border effect for NPC towns in 1.8.
I have an idea that adds a realistic effect and solves the border issue.
So put damage value on grass, that has the same texture until you reach 15. At 15 switch to a worn down grass texture.
Make all the grass tiles around npc town generate at damage 15.
That way you can dig it up and it will turn back to normal grass if you want to wipe out traces of the npc town.
Then have NPCs and players walking on grass have a chance of incrementing the damage of the tile until it gets to 15(were it stops). This would mean paths will form where people commonly walk around.
A very nice idea, although I must disagree with grass being damage just by walking on it. That would be terribly inconvenient for people who like the grass how it looks now.

Agreed. However, maybe tall grass would be less abundand the closer you get to the town, and any tall grass found in the town would look a little trampled? Also some music could play when you enter the town's borders.
1. That has nothing to do with what the OP was talking about. He wasn't asking for towns (which have been confirmed anyways), he was suggesting a way to border towns without needing a new block.
2. "There's a mod for that" is a warnable offense.
Anyways, I think this is an interesting idea, but I don't see the point of walking on grass to wear it out. I do like the worn out variation of grass being the border though.

There used to be a picture of my main characters here. It's out of date and I can't be bothered to update it. Truly a shame.
Lance, Chris, Tallix, Zelek, Regon, Andire. Information about them can be found on my profile (WIP)

I like that as well. There was a very nice thread on having certain music play in certain situations, and that could easily be a part of it.
One thing that I would not like to see is the music playing after I decide to burn the village to the ground. Once a specific thing happens (either all the NPCs being killed, all buildings being fully destroyed, or both) the music should stop and grass should slowly change back to normal.
On that note, it would be kind of sweet if NPCs don't respawn and killing all the inhabitants but leaving the buildings there makes the game play creepier music.

For village borders, why not make each NPC village a sort of fort? Give it a 2 high stone/wood wall? What would be cool is seeing a castle in the distance.
I would like to see the wall on larger villages, but not small ones. As for the zombie spawner thing, I don't really like. If I clear out a town, I want to use it for my own stuff. So I don't want random zombies just appearing because a village used to be there.

Well if the percent chance of damage is 50% it would take an average 30 times of walking on that block to change it, if it is 33% it goes up to 45ish to change it. I think it would be neat if common walkways eventually blazed a trail.
Would tell towns people where they probably need a road.
So to give the choice, what if it was configurable? So you could set that percentage to 0-100% chance.
If you set it to 0 then only be able to find the ones that were generated that way and the rest would never change.

Unfortunately I think there was a tweet that he said he was not able to do walls(or fences). Not sure what the reason as to why.

Notch said somewhere that they do not re-spawn or comeback.
(Ohh and of course I found additional threads for this when I was looking for this thread again, here and here)

Any other Ideas?
