Beverage suggestions are nothing new on this forum. What I'm trying to do here is not just suggest a new food, but also explain how this new food would function differently and add something of practical value to the game.
Meet your delicious new drink: Cactus-Ade!
What is cactus-ade? It's a tasty refreshing beverage made from cacti and sugar. Why cacti? Why sugar? Because any cactus or reed farm will make a huge surplus of those items, and they might as well go somewhere.
To create cactus-ade you'd need 3 items: a cactus block, sugar, and a bowl. You'd have to combine the 3 at a crafting table to create a bowl of cactus-ade to drink.
But this is no ordinary food item whose only difference is it heals a different number of hearts. Cactus-ade would work differently that food in a crucial way:
Cactus-ade cannot heal you. It does nothing if you're already injured. Instead, if you're at full health it grants you one temporary bonus heart, raising you to 11 health! Multiple bowls of cactus-ade taken in quick succession can raise your health all the way up to a maximum of 20 health!
The catch is that this bonus health is temporary, and only lasts for one minute. So if your bonus hearts aren't lost through injury first, one minute after you consumed each bowl of cactus ade a bonus heart would vanish.
Bonus hearts are lost first when you take damage, making cactus-ade a useful way of avoiding injury. However it requires planning and foresight to consume cactus-ade no more than one minute before exposing yourself to danger.
“Daddy, I had a bad dream.”You blink your eyes and pull up on your elbows. Your clock glows red in the darkness — it’s 3:23. “Do you want to climb into bed and tell me about it?”“No, Daddy.”The oddness of the situation wakes you up more fully. You can barely make out your daughter’s pale form in the darkness of your room. “Why not, sweetie?”“Because in my dream, when I told you about the dream, the thing wearing Mommy’s skin sat up.”For a moment, you feel paralyzed; you can’t take your eyes off of your daughter. The covers behind you begin to shift.
I liked the idea at first, but then I read about how you would gain 1 heart for only 1 minute.
Just make it heal you like any other thing would.
That would make it redundant with every other food item out there. There's no real reason to add more food items just for variety. They should have vastly different mechanics than what's already out there to provide a practical as well as ornamental difference.
We already have ways of recovering hearts after being injured. But there's no way to guard yourself from being injured in the first place. Drink a couple bowls of cactus-ade before a big fight and you have a good advantage while it lasts.
I think its a good idea but kind of similar in a way to armor since its like bonus health. I think it should make you move faster since it has food in it :smile.gif:

I like the idea / recipe, but the temporary hearts seems impractical. Using sugar and cacti gives you more reason for farms that produce those goods, I completely agree with that part. Maybe instead of the temporary hearts, you heal a set number of hearts over a period of time. Something like 1 heart every 10 seconds or a minute, so 1 bowl would heal 6 hearts. It wouldnt heal you over your max, though, but would give you a reason to drink right before wading into battle.

*Drinks tons of the stuff*
*Goes and slughters a whole town full of players*
*Is nearly unkillable*
???
ITEM PROFIT!
Sounds easy to abuse in SMP. Plus it wouldn't be rare at all. A bonus heart, no matter how temporary, shouldn't be made from things as easy to get as cactus and sugar.

It's been suggested that all foods heal over time and have cools downs. If not that, than this could be used.
