i noticed on notch's twitter he was having problems showing a town border
"I can't think of a good way to clearly show the edges of a town. I tried doing a civ-like culture border thing, but it sucks."
...
i was just wondering if replacing grass/sand whatever with brick would do well?
i just don't understand why notch is having a problem
i mean if he has the ability to randomly generate a town and can spcify any type of border he wanted to be randomly generated, saw cobblestone or what have you ( or even mossy cobblestone as per monster spawners )
i find it hard to understand why it would be hard?
perhaps make a flag sort of item that is placed at the 4 corners of a rectangular town
or even a welcome sign that kinda says "you are here"
perhaps this gives an opportunity to have randomly named towns
blocksville
cornersburg
ect
but replacing the ground with brick where the edges are seem straight forward
maybe not even brick, cobblestone would surely do
then again its very possible he's talking about how to make the town borders via code and can't get the coding right
if thats the case leave me out of it
but otherwise i'd hope a simple cobblestone or brick path would suffice
it would for me anyway?
Having a big brick square around a town would be ugly. Maybe attacking things inside a town will make the NPCs hostile, in that case you REALLY would want to know town borders. There are tons of other ways they'd be needed, but I can see why he's having a problem.

At a loss for words? Here's a few you can use: Welcome, to Night Vale...

okay i guess i see what you mean
but the 4 flags idea could work well
maybe just 1 reeeeally tall flag in the town center so that you can see the town at a distance and if you see the top of a flag stickin' up over a hill you know theres a town
this lets you locate it at a distance and if theres flags at the corners it would only be weird looking if the towns were super small
otherwise i think it would look alright and at excaping from hostile npcs they'd serve as a sort of check-point looking thing, almost like you were finishing a race?
maybe if notch adds the lanturn idea then he could use that at the top of the flag pole for light at night
or to make the borders more noticable?
though i'm sure a torch would suffice all the same
You could use mods like the one from the YogBox, where there are resources like Limestone and you can color planks. You could use colored planks as borders if you wanted to.
