Minecraft is adding more developed dungeons and an XP system in the 1.8 "Adventure Update". We can probably expect some sort of prize for killing monsters and conquering enemy "strongholds". A lot of people are hoping for RPG type weapons and armor as prizes, kind of like what the aether mod grants. Magic fire bows and +5 armor of magic sparkles and so on.
That's fine, but since Minecraft is mainly a construction/sandbox game, wouldn't it be interesting if some dungeon prizes were otherwise unobtainable building components? Instead of a magic sword or magic bow you could get otherwise unbalanced items that add supernatural elements to your buildings.
Here are a few examples of items you could win. I'm not suggesting these items in particular, just using them as examples of the kind of thing you could win, so don't judge the "construction components found in dungeons" ideas based on whether you like or don't like these particular items.
Type of Prize You Could Find
Pair of linked portal keystones, allowing you to create two portals that connect to each other from anywhere in the game.
A wireless redstone switch and wireless redstone receiver.
A powerful piston, that retains the launching ability of the piston in the piston mod and can move obsidian
An obsidian boat that can float safely on lava
An extremely bright torch that illuminates a large area
An enchanted pickaxe that (until you use it up and it breaks) can pick up smoothstone blocks, glass blocks, and other blocks that are normally destroyed or converted.
A pressure plate that only responds to hostile creatures, not neutral mobs or players
A magic minecart that rolls uphill as well as downhill
A placeable mob spawner that creates zombies that drop no loot (for your combat arena)
A stack of 64 placeable ice blocks
A stack of magic sand that falls upward instead of downward (I think something like this is in the aether mod)
Enchanted sticky piston that can pull back 12 blocks at a time
Etc.
You see what I mean. They aren't things that make the player themselves a more powerful fighter. Rather it's a way of getting supernatural and quirky stuff in your otherwise somewhat bound by physics base. Normally it might be overpowered, but the fact that you can't craft it and have to win it as a prize makes it a rare and precious commodity.
This provides an incentive for everyone to explore dungeons. Even if prefer building castles, exploring dungeons will be appealing because they'll grant a few "cheat" items that can greatly improve your constructions. Or just be prized showpieces.
I like the first one with the connected portals and the 10th one with the 64 ice blocks. But I think we should have a proper way of getting ice blocks, like putting water in a freezer.
I do too. But don't focus on these particular loot ideas, since some might be good and some might suck. What do you think of the general idea of rare building components as prizes?
i really like this idea but if notch does impliment rpg styles he should make it optional in when ypu make the world
Eg rpg mode with quests or normal mode
This is definitely one of the better ideas I've seen, and I don't think it's been suggested yet.
Maybe you could also unlock recipes for special items, like Saddles. So that you don't have to spend 50 million hours to find one, for A SERVER OF 4. Sorry, getting a little wishy.
Perhaps a type of glass block that is only oneway passable? It could make a lava dump easier to have wooden things near.
But anyway, that's a great idea. Kudos my good sir.
