General Info:
As you may know, there is currently a gap in durability between iron and diamond. Steel could potentially remedy this. In reality, steel is a durable metal created when iron, limestone, and coke(semi burned coal) are smelted in a blast furnace. Steel has been known since antiquity and the oldest steel found thus far dates back 4000 years.
Properties:
As for the material in Minecraft, its properties would be quite similar to iron. Its durability would range in the 500-600 range, seeing as iron is at 251 and diamond at an astounding 1562. Steel tools would have a damage increase of .5 hearts dealt to mobs and unarmored players. All other tool statistics are the same as iron.
Crafting:
Crafting steel would require a few more steps in order to complete. It would require the player to have a decent amount of coal and iron.
At the Workbench
This recipe creates pig iron, the un-smelted product (similar to an ore)
At the Furnace
(pig iron)
This yields one bar of steel
Uses:
Steel would have a similar niche as iron. It could be crafted into tools and armor just like iron. All other recipes utilizing iron would remain unchanged (including flint and steel) so that iron remains a useful substance.

Should be a step above iron in strength, but it seems that the different levels of strength between steel, gold, and diamond would have to be changed due to certain supplies being harder to find.

YES! I was going to post this idea but I never got around to it I think that the gap between Iron and Diamond is wayyy to large and we should be able to refine iron into steel and you can build everything iron can with steel but it will have more durability (shears and etc) also this could open up many new crafting recipies
Its not a bad idea, but I believe that Minecraft in its simplicity and fantastical summation for ores and their uses keep the game feeling like fiction. Its not supposed to be that complex. Besides, there aren't many elements in the game that make it at all realistic. For example, Obsidian is very brittle in real life... we've all heard THAT before.
It will always be a Block game, but what makes minecraft so awesome is the fantasy behind it.
What would you do with flint and steel by the way? Does this mean that the recipe for flint and iron ingot would change into flint and steel ingot? I can only assume.
Plus think about all the other blocks and items Notch would have to add if you added flint and steel. Steel weapons, steel tools, steel bucket, steel armor, steel block...
I'd rather we stick with iron and leave some space for more fantastical metals. Like Platinum?
Don't get me wrong, its a good idea. Its just not cool enough.

Steel is simply a way to make more durable tools and armor, there's a section called "Uses:" in the OP ad it states that steel is for tools (swords, pickaxes, shovels, axes, and hoes) and armor only, not other recipes like buckets. I want iron and steel to coexist in Minecraft, not for steel to outshine iron. Iron has a myriad of uses and it should remain that way. It would also obviate the need to add a new ore to the game and would save on coding for Team Mojang. Thanks for the feedback, however.

Curse PremiumThanks for the feedback, perhaps the ore would make more sense, I'll add a poll and edit the OP
