Personally, I think fishing needs a few additions along with some tweaks to existing content. To that end, I have come up with a list of ideas that should (hopefully) improve the overall experience of fishing:
-Have actual fish mobs swimming in water, They will dart around insanely fast if you try to approach/attack with a sword or bow. Using a fishing rod will let you reel one in close enough to hit with zero difficulty. Upon killing them, they'll drop one piece of meat.
-Slowly reeling in the line instead of launching the hook back at you (ouch). Each time you cast the line and reel it in will give a chance to catch a fish. This solves the problem with lag, and adds a pleasant feel overall to fishing.
-Another size of fish (Large) could be added. These would give 3 hearts when cooked, and give fishing a small edge over farming wheat.
-Attaching a fly hook to the rod gives an extra chance to catch fish. Making a fly hook requires an iron bar and 6 feathers.
-Fishing over deep areas of water will let you catch the large fish. Giving a use for boats and deep pools of water in general.
Seeing as bread is a stationary source of food, and pork gives a large amount of health, Fish should be known for being readily available wherever there's water.
Note: I am fairly certain this does not count as a wishlist, seeing as this is centered solely around a single topic. ('lulz ai wunt guns, dinos, nukes, rockets, an space'!)

Good idea, I think there could also be a crafting recipie for a lobster cage, and you could place it at the bottom of deep water (maybe the addition of seaweed and then lobsters would spawn mostly at seaweed) and if a lobster walked into it the cage would catch it.
